I am continuously curious and love trying new things. It might even be my whole persona. The obvious would be trying new restaurants and traveling to new places. You see plenty of that here on the blog. But it also extends to making pottery, taking on cooking challenges, and learning more about where my food comes from.

So, in the spirit of continuously learning, I kept track of the new things I tried this year. Here are 15 things I did.

Make Croissants

I love croissants! That’s the main reason why I took a baking class at Sur La Table. Making croissants is a time-consuming task, and I have yet to try it at home, but this was a tasty and fun class.

Check out all the cooking class options in Austin in this post.

Try Non-Alcoholic Wine

The non-alcoholic beverage industry was valued at $1.46 trillion in 2023, and demand shows the interest is still strong. People want fun drinks without alcohol for a variety of reasons like to be healthier or to avoid alcohol. As someone who drinks alcohol, I don’t recall a non-alcoholic cocktail that has wowed me, and now I can say the same for non-alcoholic wine. The ones I tried were either terrible (like tasting Pine Sol) or lacked the depth I enjoy in wine.

Baked for a Cooking Competition

I joined my friend Scott’s barbecue team to bake the dessert. The competition was more about the barbecue categories (ribs, turkey, and brisket), but the dessert category was equal weight in points. The dessert had to be s’mores-themed and have chocolate, cookie, and toasted marshmallow elements.

It was an intricate 9lb, layered sheet cake, the biggest thing I ever baked. (We had to submit 5 servings.) The cake had graham cracker crust, chocolate cake, graham cookie butter, 2 kinds of marshmallow icing, graham cracker buttercream, tuile crumbles, and toasted marshmallows.

The cake looked great and tasted pretty good, but it ended up in 7th place out of 10. Our team came in 5th out of 10 overall. My thought is the cake was too intricate and the elements weren’t very clear. But, it was a fun weekend overall and it was fun to flex my creativity in this way!

Made Gnocchi

I took a cooking class with Prickly Pear Cooking Classes, and we made a multi-course Italian dinner. It was my first time making gnocchi (pan-fried), and it was easier than I thought it would be.

Read about the Prickly Pear Cooking Class here.

Experienced a Total Solar Eclipse

While it ended up being cloudy in Austin, we experienced the darkening of the sky and saw the eclipse phases for a few seconds. It was a spooky thing to see. (Here’s Kaira being a cute glasses model.)

Cut 13 Inches of Hair Off

After a year of no haircuts, it was due, and with my hair being so long, I thought, why not donate it? The organization required at least 12 inches of hair and one day, a child will be wearing my hair as a wig. Local salon Urban Betty does half-price donation cuts and takes care of sending it in.

My hair hadn’t been that short since I was a kid and it took some time to get used to. It has grown back to a familiar length, and I’m thinking I won’t cut it that short again!

Saw a Chiropractor

Dr. Kyle Hardwick of Adjusted ATX invited me in for a complimentary session. I had never been to a chiropractor before, and I could see how the services could be beneficial for temporary or chronic pain. Each part of our body is connected to another, and our spine is a crucial part of health and wellness. That’s how Dr. Kyle was inspired to become a chiropractor. He suffered migraines as a teenager and it was finally a chiropractor that helped him find relief.

While chiropractic care helps injuries or pain, it can also benefit your overall health, like improving your posture (who else sits at a desk all day like me?) and encouraging faster recovery. This can be a medicine-free solution to get to the root of health issues.

Served on Jury Duty

This wasn’t something I voluntarily chose, but I understand the honorable duty of civil service. Yes, it was slightly inconvenient to not be at work for three days, but the experience itself was eye-opening. It gave me a better understanding of the justice system, the court process, and possibly too many details about the assault definitions. It also showed me that while the justice system is not perfect – they call it a burden of proof for a reason – it is the fairest way to resolve conflicts and uphold the law in our society.

Dove a Cenote

I got to scuba dive this year and they were spent diving cenotes near Cancun. Our guide mentioned that divers usually don’t enjoy it the first time, and I can agree. It’s not something I want to do again. Being in the pitch dark 30 feet underwater is unnerving. I think I’d rather do that on a blackwater dive in the ocean where you’ll see sea creatures. However, I could go back and snorkel or simply explore the caverns above ground.

See more details about the cenote dives in this post.

Swam with a Whale Shark

Also part of the Cozumel trip was an excursion to swim with whale sharks near Cancun. While the experience was slightly chaotic – multiple boats, needing to jump in the water quickly – there were brief seconds of wonder being next to this beautiful, gigantic creature. I hope I get to happen upon one in the wild one day!

Read more about swimming with whale sharks in this post.

Went to a Silent Disco

Have you ever been to a silent disco? Everyone has headphones with multiple stations playing different genres of music. Each station will show a different color on your headphones. Then you are all dancing in the same space. It’s a fun way to be your own DJ. Be sure to take your headphones off at some point. It’s funny to be in this setting and hear nothing but dancing footsteps and a lone voice singing along.

Walked the UT Football Field

Before the season started, I got the chance to go on the field for a media event! I have great memories of being in the stadium and around game days, and I enjoyed the season this year. Here’s to more success in the next season!

Pet a Longhorn

We went to Hyatt Lost Pines for a staycation, and they have a longhorn on the property. At a certain time, they walk the longhorn to a central location for guests to interact and take photos. Whoa, this is a big bull!

Tried Crochet

My friend Carme is a local maker who started crochet in 2021. Since then she created Karmi-Gurumi, a fun crochet business that sells a variety of things. My favorite is her plushies. She is teaching a crochet class at The Paper + Craft Pantry next March and put together a test workshop for friends. Crochet is a lot harder than I thought it would be! Hopefully one day I’ll pick it up and try again. The orange circle is what I completed.

Making My Own Matcha Drinks at Home

Ever since going to a tea ceremony in Japan, I’ve wanted to try making matcha at home. I went to a great matcha shop in New York City and picked up matcha while I was there. I was also gifted a matcha set for Christmas, so I was all set! I’ve been testing it out, and I’m enjoying practicing.

I’m looking forward to trying new things in 2025. I’m thinking of stained glass, embroidery, and archery. Have any suggestions? Let me know!

This post about Austin pottery studios was last updated in April 2025.

I’ve been wanting to take a wheel-throwing pottery class for a while, so I was glad the timing worked out to try it. Making pottery is a challenging and rewarding craft, and the work of local artists always inspires me.

Taking a one-time pottery class would be an excellent way to test if it’s something you want to commit to, and then there are 6-8 week classes to dive into advanced techniques and practice your skills. Plus, there are a lot of studio options in Austin.

Keep reading to learn more about the process and where you can take a class.

Pottery Class Process

It took a long process – several months and visits – to get the final product, but it was a fun time. (This process varies by the studio.)

Here’s how it went with my time at Round Rock Community Clay.

In the wheel throwing class, I learned how to throw the wheel on and shape the vessel. It takes a proper stance, synchronicity, and patience. The instructor gave us some pointers and we spent most of the time creating. For me, I didn’t quite know what shape I was aiming for, but I knew they would probably end up being for plants. In three hours, we could create four vessels.

After drying, the pots were fired in the kiln. Three of my vessels made it. Sometimes they don’t if the bottom or sides are too thin. Two weeks later, I went back to glaze (add the color) them. It’s hard to see what the final color will look like, but the rule of thumb is to do several coats. As you can see in the final results, the spots I tried to add to the green and pink pots didn’t quite show up.

After drying again, they go back into the kiln for a final firing. After a few weeks, I picked up the pots and bought some new plants to go in them!

Pottery Studios in Austin

Wheel-throwing pottery can seem hard at first, but you’ll get the hang of it. You’ll take something home, even if it’s a bit lopsided. So, pottery is great for beginners, and there are many options if you want to make it a long-term hobby.

One-time classes range from $65-100 per person. If you want to further your skills, some studios provide a 6 or 8-week class that ranges from $250-395.

Below are studios in Austin. I’ve included info about one-time classes and studios typically also have multi-week class options. Prices are current as of September 2024.

The Contemporary Austin is an art museum with sculptures and installations that inspire creativity! Check out my recent visit.

One of the most riveting art pieces I’ve ever seen involved a naked man playing his guitar while taking a bath.

That man, Icelandic artist Ragnar Kjartansson, also happens to be the creator of The Visitors, the riveting art piece. It’s an installation video art piece that features nine different videos playing simultaneously on different screens. Each video features an artist or musician, located inside a different part of the same house, playing their part in the performance of a song. The 64-minute performance repeats the words “Once again, I fall into my feminine ways.” You can watch a snippet of it to get an idea of the set-up (here’s one the San Francisco Museum of Art made), but it is nothing compared to walking around the dark room, catching glimpses of each person’s performance and being surrounded by the haunting song.

Ragnar Kjartansson’s art varies by medium and many feature repetitive performances, showcasing artists’ endurance and providing the audience a strange and cathartic experience. My experience with The Visitors captivated me and was the main reason why I knew I would be seeing The Contemporary Austin’s latest exhibit.

The Contemporary Austin SS Hangover Ragnar Kjartansson

S.S. Hangover featured a hand-painted and restored Icelandic fishing boat, a captain, and a six-piece brass band playing a dreamy, elegant looping tune over a few hours. At The Contemporary Austin’s Laguna Gloria location by the lake, the boat was towed to the middle of the lagoon and anchored for the performance, each set about an hour.

The exhibit didn’t move me as much as The Visitors did, but it enticed the audience to stop, listen, and focus. Hearing the slow repetition, you wonder if there will be more than this melody. Pulling in a metaphor about life, maybe there isn’t more than this simple tune, but it asked you to slow down and enjoy the moment for what it is. The performance could be a basis for meditation, and if you let go enough, you’d find something you weren’t expecting.

Ragnar Kjartansson SS Hangover Contemporary Austin

Coming to see S.S. Hangover was the perfect opportunity to wander the museum, especially since it was a perfect spring day in Austin. The Contemporary Austin has a handful of permanent and visiting exhibitions at its sculpture park at Laguna Gloria. (Pictured below are Elmgreen & Dragset’s Watching on the far left and Ai WeiWei’s Iron Tree Trunk on the far right.)

Laguna Gloria is a beautiful historic landmark with lake views, the Driscoll Villa, and a short trail with sculptures to discover along the way. Walking along the trails is an ideal way to see art, and map in hand, it felt like a treasure hunt.

My favorite sculpture there is a permanent exhibit called Water Woman by Wangechi Mutu. It also looks beautiful from behind because she looks out into the lagoon.

The whimsical sculpture of Crying Miffy by Tom Sachs is fun. Miffy came from a children’s book and later became a cartoon character on TV and in a movie.

Liam Gillick’s Raised Laguna Discussion Platform is a colorful exhibit near the water.

Art challenges what you know and think. Some art pieces don’t speak to me or I don’t understand them, but I can appreciate the imagination of the artist and his courage to put ideas into the world. You never know what you’ll be drawn to, and it’s similar to specific chords or lyrics of a song or a mesmerizing dance performance.

Terry Allen’s Road Angel

Carol Bove

When I do like art pieces, it sparks my imagination. It makes me want to create. It reminds me that everyone is creative if she allows herself the time and space. (Photos of sculptures left to right: Paul McCarthy’s White Snow #3, Tom Friedman’s Looking Up, Monika Sosnowska’s The stairs.)

If you feel like you’re lacking creativity, go visit a new museum and see what you discover. In Austin, we’re lucky to have a handful of museums and art exhibits around town, and they are fairly accessible in location and cost. Austin appreciates and fosters art, and I hope that’s something residents and visitors take advantage of here!

What’s your favorite art piece you’ve discovered in your hometown or in your travels?

The Contemporary Austin
Two locations: Laguna Gloria (3809 West 35th Street, Austin, TX 78703) and Jones Center (700 Congress Avenue, Austin, TX 78701)
Admission fee of $5 per adult covers entrance fee to both locations.
Website: https://www.thecontemporaryaustin.org/

P.S. Speaking of art, my other favorite pieces in Austin are Ellsworth Kelly’s Austin and James Turrell’s The Color Inside.

The adventure’s not over. You can find me on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Bloglovin’. You can also subscribe to the exclusive email list.

how-to-be-more-creative-fearless-captivations

Creativity is a hot topic right now. We’re all trying to find ways to do work we love, be more productive and innovative and live our best lives. I’ve found that it comes back to being creative. When we exercise our creativity, we allow new ideas to come to life and it enlightens parts of our brain that we may not use often. Some may argue that creativity is genetic, but putting yourself in a creative environment and putting effort in developing your creative skills proves it’s more about nurturing.

If you want to be more creative, first, you need to change your thinking. Think like a kid. What would you do if you couldn’t fail? Be positive. Worry less about perfectionism and more about discovering what is possible. Be open-minded to consider new ideas. Get curious. Be aware of fear (fear of failure or not doing something well enough) and don’t stop when that fear appears. Some of the ideas listed below may feel strange or silly when you’re first starting out. Keep at it and see where your creative routine can take you. Stay hungry.

Next, you need to find the time and be intentional about it. Try committing to one hour every week or twenty minutes every day, whatever your schedule allows or however long you feel you need. Put it on your calendar and don’t skip it! Be present during your creativity time.

Now you’re ready to exercise your creativity. Here are some ideas!

  • Limit your tools. Make something with certain tools.
  • Take photos. Capture the things that inspire you. Look for new perspectives and things you never noticed before.
  • Use a new app. Try photo editing apps like Instagram.
  • Doodle.
  • Sign up for a class. Learn about something you have no or little skills to do. This can be art or cooking classes in your city. There are MANY online class options available, and they’re usually an hour long. I recommend Brit + Co or Skillshare.
  • Make something with your hands. Explore Pinterest for a DIY project or new recipe to make. It can be as simple as a paper banner or as intricate as a wood-burned board. Check out my posts about DIY projects.
  • Get moving! Go for a walk outside or go to a work-out class. Bring your camera to check two things off at once – a photo-taking walk!
  • Keep a journal. Fill it with ideas, thoughts, and drawings. Write about interesting parts of your day.
  • Watch TED talks.
  • Brighten up your space. Surround yourself with things that you find inspiring, even if you don’t quite know why.
  • Go to a busy place like a coffee shop. Feed off of the energy in the room.
  • Watch and/or do stand-up comedy.
  • Travel to a new city or country.
  • Study a subject you’re interested in. Learn. Research. Read.
  • Attend creative events. Museums. Something you wouldn’t usually go to.

Have a suggestion about how to exercise your creativity? Comment below!

ReMake 2015

I recently came back from a very fun and creative weekend in San Francisco. It was my first time in the city and I loved it (more travel posts later). My main reason for the trip was Brit + Co’s Re:Make conference. It was a day filled with creative inspiration, smart and entertaining speakers, new company discovery, and brilliant and colorful design. It was fun to talk and geek out about DIY and creativity with other attendees! In more detail, here are four things that made Brit + Co’s #ReMake2015 conference rock.

Creativity

The website and conference is focused on one thing: creativity. Brit + Co’s Founder and CEO Brit Morin started the morning discussing creativity. From studies and questionnaires, we know that most adults don’t think they are creative and exercising creativity has the positive outcomes of happier and healthier lives. According to research from San Francisco State University, those who participate in regular creative hobbies perform 15-30% better at work! So, what if we held creativity with as much importance as eating good foods or exercising? By consistently setting aside time to be creative, we have the opportunity to be more relaxed, more energized, and happier. That’s one of the reasons why at each seat were watercolor notebooks, brushes and watercolors to be used throughout the event.

Speakers

The conference featured smart and entertaining speakers who helped us think about creativity in new ways, encouraged us to act on our goals and shared their insights in moving forward and doing great things. Some quick highlights:

  • How can you be more creative? Author and Professor Tina Seelig recommended paying more attention to things! Think about the processes in your daily life and how to make them better.
  • Creativity X Organization = Impact. Scott Belsky emphasized the importance of focus and organization to actually make progress on your ideas. Coming up with ideas is great, but instead of focusing on the next idea, commit to one and organize your routine and plan to accomplish it.
  • Less than 1% of girls study computer science. Made with Code is on a mission to change that. Kate Parker, Made with Code’s Head of Marketing, was on hand to share the cool things the organization is doing and why it’s so important. Their website is a great resource to learn more.
  • Suzanne Howard, Partner at IDEO and founder of IDEO U encouraged: Creativity is a muscle you need to exercise to prevent atrophy.
  • Lindsey Stirling ended the day with an incredible violin performance!

Up-and-Coming Cool Companies & Brit + Co’s #IAMCREATIVE Foundation Winners

One of my favorite parts of the conference was hearing from up-and-coming companies. There were a few products that I thought were so cool and are on their way to big things when they launch. You can read all about the featured companies here but here are the three I was really amazed by.

  1. June is an intelligent oven that recognizes the food you put into it and cooks it to perfection. Hundreds of recipes are programmed into the oven and you can add your own. The company includes an app for recipe suggestions.
  2. Little Lotus has a created a swaddling blanket to keep your baby at the perfect temperature, providing peace of mind. They are also a one-for-one company and your purchase of a blanket gifts a life-saving Embrace infant warmer (a blanket that acts as an incubator) to babies in developing countries around the world.
  3. Lily is the world’s first flying camera that is a combination of a drone and a GoPro. Throw it up in the air and it will follow you. Check out the cool video on their website to see it in action!

Also, earlier this year, Brit + Co unveiled #IAMCREATIVE Foundation to provide grants to creative individuals ready to take the next step in entrepreneurship. All five finalists were introduced and surprised with grant rewards at the conference. Learn more about the winners in this Brit + Co post.

Design

Last but definitely not least, the design was on point! As you could have guessed, around every corner was something Instagrammable, creative and asthetically-pleasing. From the GIANT coloring book wall to colorful signs and displays, the setting was a constant inspiration. Creative displays and friendly representatives were there to gently promote their products and it was obvious the sponsors had a fun time being as creative as possible about how to present themselves. It was the perfect place to do it!
