Tips for Group Travel

I have two group trips this year and these tips on how to keep the peace when traveling with a group is so helpful!

Japan Clothing Rental

To decrease luggage weight on their planes, Japan Airlines is offering clothing rental services for guests on their flights. You can reserve your clothes ahead of time and you’ll get your pieces at your hotel. Leave the clothes at your hotel when you leave and voila, you’ve saved time and effort on packing for your trip!

La Sagrada Familia

When I first started traveling as an adult, I went to Spain, and La Sagrada Familia was stunning. It recently made news as it’s one step closer to its 2026 expected completion. It’s only taken more than 140 years!

Best National Parks

I haven’t been to many national parks, but it’s on my list! This Matador article shares the best park for specific travelers. For example, hiking in Olympic National Park in Washington looks like a dream, or stargazing in Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah seems magical. Where would you recommend?

Toronto

I’ve heard so many great things about visiting Toronto. If you’re a foodie, this guide about Toronto food is for you.

Hello, Captain

Love fishing or hunting? Captain Experiences is a website that helps you find the best vendor for your experience. This is good for people who have a bucket list fish they want to catch.

Weekends Near Austin

The unique lodging options near Austin have exploded in the last few years. From yurts to shipping containers, there are a variety of options for a weekend getaway. This list on Tribeza gives you ideas.

I’m a Survivor

If you want to take adventure to another level, Desert Island Survival, has a challenge for you. It involves 5 days of training and 3 days of on-your-own survival in a beautiful yet uninhabited place. It’s the show Survivor or Naked and Afraid in real life! Panama, Philippines, and Tonga are the available locations for this wild adventure.

Summer of Travel

It’s happening. More than 80% of surveyed adults plan to travel this summer. Despite inflation, people are eager to get out. Maybe it’s wanting to make up for the past few years/summers of little to no travel. Europe and Asia are big destinations. If you’re one of these travelers, remember to book early, plan for extra time at the airport, and have patience.

Many of us don’t see the negative effects of our lifestyles because we don’t live by the ocean. I like to think that being able to experience the beauty of the ocean day in and out gives you a stronger bond in saving it. This article gives six ways that we can be more mindful of the marine impact.

Michelin in Space

Next year, you could spend $129,237 to take a 6-hour trip 15.5 miles above the Earth’s surface and enjoy Michelin-starred food on the vessel. See this article for the details!

Wanderlust? This quarter’s Fearless Wanderlust post has travel news and inspiration to plan your next trip.

Eight years ago, I started these regular posts called Fearless Wanderlust. They were monthly for nearly six years before they became a quarterly feature. I think that change coincided with the industry’s slowdown and my own in 2020. Now 69 Fearless Wanderlust posts later, travel is still an important part of my life, even if big trips only come a few times a year. I hope these posts continue to inspire you to have an adventure!

Epic Trips

I’ve been on some epic trips, somewhere I look back and think, “Wow, that was really cool.” So this list of 10 epic trips has me dreamy-eyed. With all the Yellowstone I’ve been watching, Montana has entered my radar.

Airport Stats

This airport arrival time list will make sure you’re at the airport at the right time. One hour has been my go-to for my local airport but the busiest airports around the U.S. need almost 3 hours!

Cruise Life

Picture this: remote job, apartment, and dining included, and you get to travel the world. This 28-year-old is living on a cruise for a year for $50,000. Spending $4,200 a month is cheaper than living where he was (San Diego) and he gets to see the world.

Antarctica

My ultimate bucket list destination is Antarctica. This place that has long been remote and hard to get to has become more accessible to travelers, even though the journey is still long and costs a lot (almost $10,000 per person). Never heard of how to get there? Check out this article about author Roxanne Gay’s Antarctica trip.

Oldest Hotel in the World

Would you have guessed it was in Japan? This hotel near Mount Fuji has been in the same family for 52 generations! Since 705 A.D.! It looks like a great place to stay.

Oldest Restaurant in the World

The oldest restaurant has been around for 293 years! Restaurante Botin in Madrid, Spain has been open since 1725.

Travel Insurance

Do you get travel insurance when you book trips? For me, it depends on the trip. My credit card has a basic travel insurance and when I go on dive trips, many times dive insurance is required (used DAN). I’ve also been to more unfamiliar places, so sometimes it’s good to have a backup plan (used World Nomads). This travel insurance guide by Daily Drop can give you more tips.

Travel Tips

This article on 21 subjective travel tips is fun. I follow many tips, like taking tours, walking around a city, and sharing tips when you get home (you can find plenty of travel guides on this blog).

Farm Stays in Italy

A popular way to travel in Italy is by staying in bed and breakfast places on farms. Called agriturismo, this is a good way to stay in places outside the big cities and be closer to wineries. Take a look at Adventurous Kate’s agriturismo guide to learn more.

Fishing

The picture at the top is from my last trip – to Freeport on the Texas coast to go fishing. Among the many wonderful trips I’ve gone on, this was a very memorable one!

Wanderlust? This quarter’s Fearless Wanderlust post has travel news and inspiration to plan your next trip.

Here’s the final quarterly installment of Fearless Wanderlust for the year! Travel has evolved so much in the last two years and continues to do so. If you’re like me, I’m sure you’re evaluating the rising cost of travel and the effects labor shortage has on travel. No matter how we do it, I think travel is necessary as a reset for daily life, an opportunity to experience something new, and to connect with others. Whether it’s an hour’s drive away or two plane rides away, I hope you’re already planning trips!

Road Trip Fun

Taking a road trip? The website Make My Drive Fun will give you options along your route to see and do. For example, from Austin to Dallas you could stop to see a mermaid statue, a house with lots of flamingo decor, and a replica of the Munster Mansion.

Cruise Through the U.S.

Yes, you read that right. This river cruise goes from Minneapolis to Pittsburgh, sailing through 10 states and taking 23 days. This new route is the longest itinerary available by the company.

Travel Hacking Tips

Do you travel hack? In other words, do you strategize ways to gain miles and points to redeem for travel? Here’s a very lengthy tutorial on how to do it. It takes a bit of time and effort but it may be worth it to you to travel for free!

Live Your Trip

This article on Afar is a thoughtful one. When I travel, it is very much about seeing as much as possible, which has its pros and cons. There is so much to discover and I want to make the most of the experience. But it’s also important to live in the moment and take in the place instead of checking things off a list. Learning how to go deeper instead of wider (quality over quantity) has been an adventure.

50 States

…and what to do in them! This list shares one thing to do in every state. Can you guess what they have for Texas? Eat brisket! If you need some travel inspiration, this will help.

Rethinking Tourism

This Skift article about how to do tourism with the local community in mind is a good read. It’s an ongoing conversation, especially with the loss of tourism in the last two years. As travelers, we should remember we are guests in the places we travel and we shouldn’t leave destruction behind.

Raccoon City

Did you know Toronto has the highest density of raccoons and the city loves it? To me, it sounds like seeing a raccoon in Toronto is as normal as seeing a squirrel in Austin. So for better or worse, look out for raccoons when you visit Toronto.

Destinations

While travel posts on this blog are sporadic, I love putting them together because I know what it’s like to plan a trip. There is a lot of information out there and many times, not a central place to get it, so I hope my travel guides make it a little easier. You can see everything linked on my Destinations page, but here are some location links to inspire you:

Wanderlust? This quarter’s Fearless Wanderlust post has travel news and inspiration to plan your next trip.

Summer Travel

How is your summer going? Are you jet setting to Europe, avoiding plane chaos by road tripping, or avoiding the high travel prices altogether? As I mentioned in the previous Fearless Wanderlust post, I’m staying local this summer. We did a quick weekend in San Antonio, spent two weekends in Wimberley on the Blanco River (pictured above), and will soon visit the Texas coast. It’s been a low-key summer, but in the fall, we’re planning to visit Florida and a Caribbean country we’ve never been to!

Michelin in Florida

Speaking of Florida, the Michelin Guide recently added Florida to their worldwide award listings, with 15 Michelin-starred restaurants in three cities – Orlando, Tampa, and Miami. Michelin is one of the ways to find great restaurants to visit, though these also tend to be a more expensive dining experience.

Mexico City Rental

The vacation rental market has expanded and I often see eye-catching options on social media or in media articles. Take this architect’s home in Mexico City for example. It’s a 1.2-acre park with a unique house.

Rugged Adventures

If you’re looking for a unique travel experience, consider a horse trek or hiking tour in Mongolia, Kazakhstan, or Siberia! When it comes to travel destinations, this is definitely somewhere a smaller percentage of tourists visit.

Walking Tours

GuruWalk provides free walking tours all around the world, so check this out when you travel.

Digital Nomads

Nowadays, the number of digital nomads is growing because of the expansion of remote work. Here’s a list of the best cities for digital nomads, places that give you the structure to get work done and provide a community for socialization.

Pink Hotel

I hope you like the color pink! The Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo, California has 110 individually themed rooms, elegantly decorated dining spots, a spa, and more. This could be a fun spot for a girly getaway.

Happiest Country

For the fifth year in a row, Finland is the happiest country in the world. Why? Satisfaction with its government is a big factor (honesty and trust) but the culture and things to do help too. For me, the weather is a significant factor of satisfaction, so while I wouldn’t enjoy cold winters, highs in the 60s in the summer sound nice!

Wanderlust? Me too! My quarterly Fearless Wanderlust posts will keep you informed about travel news and give you inspiration for your next trip.

We’re on the cusp of summer. Have you been planning trips? The world has opened up more and more since the last edition of Fearless Wanderlust in January. It is great to see!

For people who depend on tourism and travel for their income, a sense of normalcy is returning. But it is also an opportunity to do things differently, better than before. I hope it means less over-tourism so that nature can have time to recover and people can be more thoughtful about their travel plans.

I’ve been making summer plans and it will be a handful of local trips – San Antonio, Houston, Wimberley, and Galveston. Visiting a Texas river has become an annual adventure and it’s been a few years since last visiting these Texas cities. I’m looking forward to relaxing and eating! If you’re looking for options in Texas, see this post about day trips and weekend getaways.

Walking Around Canada

A new 435-mile walking route in Prince Edward Island, Canada has some beautiful views!

Canceled Flights

Airports and airlines are feeling the return of travel. In Austin, I’ve seen news of canceling and automatic rescheduling of flights and hours-long waits to get through security in the last couple of months. Why is this happening? Shortage of pilots, shortage of airport staff, reduced flight schedules, and weather are some reasons. See this article for more details.

Cenotes in Mexico

I recently read an article about disappearing Mexican cenotes due to construction. Cenotes are a diving attraction, so I’m hoping to make it there before there is major destruction. They’re also places to swim and to marvel. See this post by Adventurous Kate 50+ cenotes to visit.

Adventure Travel Here

If you’re looking to do some adventure travel, these 15 countries could be on your list. My top pick based on where I haven’t been yet: Australia.

Running Vacation

Love running and traveling? I learned about this company called Vacation Races which hosts races in beautiful places like the U.S. National Parks.

Best Food Cities

A big part of my travels is eating! I love discovering the local cuisine, going on food tours, and trying new restaurants. This Eater list shares 13 cities in the world that are somewhat underrated yet have an exciting foodie scene. One of those cities is close – San Antonio. It’s one of the reasons why I visited for my bachelorette party and why I’m looking forward to visiting this summer.

Pasta Adventures

Do you know 67 types of pasta? Well, now you will. See this article to learn more.

Where to Go Next

If you’re having trouble deciding where to go next, here’s a quick quiz that presents you with a location. My quiz result gave me Finland!

Guatemala

I hadn’t considered Guatemala for my travels but this post from Matador makes me want to visit.

Best New Hotels in the World

These new hotels are incredible – picturesque, luxurious, and glamorous. Luxury hotels are not what I typically book when I travel but I love the design of these properties and I’m sure they have the hospitality service to match.

Happy traveling this summer!

P.S. Pictured above is the rooftop patio of one of Austin’s newest hotels – Thompson Austin. You can see this view when dining in their restaurant Wax Myrtles. I didn’t love the food but I did love the design.

P.P.S. If you’re looking for more travel guides, my Destinations page is the place to look based on location.

Wanderlust? Me too! My quarterly Fearless Wanderlust posts will keep you informed about travel news and give you inspiration for your next trip.

Hello, travelers! Who’s with me in willing travel to be abundant this year? I’ve been very grateful that I’ve had the chance to travel in the last two years. Travel is a big part of my life and a source of happiness, so I hope this post gives you some inspiration and encouragement to make some plans.

Best Time to Book a Hotel

Travel hacks are all around if you look. They change with the times but it doesn’t hurt to try to save money. Check out this post from Afar and see this old post I wrote about hotels.

Iceland

Iceland is on my bucket list! Oh Happy Day posted about her trip, so I’m saving it here for the recommendations.

Is Tourism Good or Bad?

That’s the question Kristin of Be My Travel Muse poses in this post. It’s a tricky subject with pros and cons. I found the Afar series about Hawaii after I returned from my trip. I didn’t think about these topics when considering my trip and a bit of it came up during our Mauna Kea tour. Something to think about as you plan future travel!

Read to Travel

If you like traveling from the comfort of your home, this list of 86 best travel books will keep you occupied! I haven’t read very many of these, so I’ll definitely pick a few to add to my list.

Best Places to Visit

I like checking out annual award winners to get inspiration and to admire photos of all the fancy resorts. Readers chose Portugal, New Zealand, and Japan as the top three countries. The top three big U.S. cities are not a surprise: Chicago, NYC, and New Orleans. See the full list of winners here.

Make Plans Now for National Parks

If you’re wanting to visit a popular national park this year, be sure to look at reservation requirements early. Here’s a post from The Points Guy with some tips. Also, don’t forget to take advantage of the five free admission days.

Travel for Food

Do you travel for food? Yelp recently published a top 100 restaurants in the U.S. list. It features popular and affordable eats, including Austin’s Bird Bird Biscuit.

How Many Countries?

One of my life goals is to visit 50 countries; I’m at 17. (There are 197 countries in the world.) This stresses me out a bit because it feels like so many countries and so little time when I factor in the rate of going to one new country a year (based on time off and savings). But it’s about the process, right? This article gives some interesting findings about Americans and travel. I’m part of the 11% of Americans who have visited 10+ countries. Thankfully for the people who don’t travel abroad, there are many places in the U.S. to visit and media (internet, movies, etc) these days can connect us worldwide.

Travel Bucket List

Speaking of life lists, do you want to put more on yours? I’ve been thinking about it too! Check out this list of 137+ things you could experience. Some things I’ve added: see lava from a volcano and swim with a whale shark.

Where to Next?

I’ve almost got all my Hawaii posts up (see them here), I’ll be updating my Costa Rica posts with information from our trip around New Year’s Eve, and we’ll soon be going to Utah (new state for me!) to ski.

Other plans have been tossed around but we’re cautious about making plans too far in the future. I would love to visit a new country this year since two years have gone by since that’s happened. We’ve talked about Dominica and Portugal. And I’m hoping for a big birthday trip!

What travel plans do you have this year?

Wanderlust? Me too! My quarterly Fearless Wanderlust posts will keep you informed about travel news and give you inspiration for your next trip.

Welcome to Summer!

It seems like most people are going on trips this summer to make up for not much traveling last year. People are going to typical summer destinations like Florida, Mexico, and Hawaii. Flight data shows more people are traveling to Hawaii, one of the most exotic locations in the U.S. Have you booked or taken a trip?

Photo Map

Do you keep track of the states you’ve visited? Maybe you see a landmark, drink a local beer, or take a hike in the state when you visit. You can track your states with a fun and conversation-starting map where you can add a photo sticker on every state you cross off.

Let’s Go to Space

The first space hotel is coming in 2027. It’ll host 280 guests and 112 crew. Start saving now; it could cost you $250,000 or more.

Bike Trips

If you love biking, this would be a great vacation option for you. VBT is a worldwide biking tour company. Think of it like a hop-on, hop-off bus tour but you’ll be biking (bikes included) from place to place, exploring a country. You’ll spend six+ days biking up to 20 miles a day. The mileage and cycling levels vary by trip but this could be a fun and different way to see a destination.

Unique Adventures

Speaking of unique guided tours, I also found this company called Uncharted Society. If you’re visiting an outdoorsy location, see if there’s a tour nearby (a couple of hours long to a full day) to hop on an ATV, snowmobile, or jetski. I would love to try some of these!

Dark Sky Parks

I visited a friend’s lake house a few weeks ago and enjoyed a star-filled sky with less light pollution than what I typically see. That’s one of my favorite things about being in nature, you’re able to detach from the world and take in the outdoors. Did you know there are places designated “dark sky” where you can see the best starry skies? Check out this website.

Bucket List Trips

What’s on your bucket list? Maybe one of these trips? Some of these involve some planning and saving but are worth it! Here are my comments on some of these:

  • You can visit Teotihuacán when you visit Mexico City. It’s about an hour drive one-way. Learn more in this post.
  • People take the long hiking trip to Machu Picchu, but when I visit, I think I’ll take the shorter route. I’m scared of altitude sickness!
  • I’ve said it before and will keep saying it – Egypt is a must-visit place! The Great Pyramid is located about a 30-minute drive from Cairo. The history and artifacts in Egypt are astounding. Plan a future trip, especially since the Grand Egyptian Museum will be opening this year.
  • I’ve looked into a diving liveaboard for the Galapagos Islands. A seven-night liveaboard is the only way to dive the Galapagos efficiently. It costs about $6,000+ per person! If you’re not a diver, a four-night sight-seeing cruise will cost about $2,000+, and these costs are before navigating a few flights to the islands. It’s definitely a trip to save for.

Underwater Escape Room

Talk about a pivot. What happens when a dive company loses its influx of tourists? Create an underwater escape room and market to local divers.

Best Eco-Friendly Restaurants in the World

I’m bookmarking this list of eco-friendly restaurants for my next adventures! The only restaurant on this list that I’ve heard of is the one on my bucket list – Blue Hill at Stone Barns in New York. Do you have any restaurants on your bucket list?

Nature Beauty

Some places in the world just make you stop and stare, especially if it’s not man-made and all nature’s doing. Case in point: Vermillion Cliffs National Monument in Arizona. Check out photos here.

Next Adventure

Where are you going next? This CN Traveler list gives some creative domestic and international options. As I mentioned in the last Fearless Wanderlust post, our next big trip will be to Hawaii! Like many in the U.S., we booked a trip to Hawaii because it is in the U.S. and has incredible diving and outdoor activities. I’m looking forward to diving with manta rays, summiting a volcano, taking hikes, and eating all the food!

P.S. That top photo is of Lake Travis Waterloo Adventures, a fun obstacle course on the lake in Austin.

Follow the adventures on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Bloglovin’. You can also subscribe to the exclusive email list.

Wanderlust? Me too! My quarterly Fearless Wanderlust posts will keep you informed about travel news and give you inspiration for your next trip.

Phew, it’s been a while since you’ve seen a Fearless Wanderlust post here! As you know, there wasn’t a lot of big travel going on last year. If you’re like me, you probably enjoyed some nearby road trips to spacious locations with outdoor activities. But, the country continues to open up and the beauty of U.S. destinations, especially National Parks, are hot destinations! Here are some of my suggestions for U.S. destinations to plan a trip in the next year:

Let’s Go Skiing

We visited Telluride last month and it was a fun trip! (That’s where the top photo is from.) We were mostly beginner skiers but we all enjoyed the time trying out the slopes, enjoying the mountains, and taking a trip. Read all about that trip in this post.

Future Travel

Are you planning any trips this year? The E.U. announced this week that they will be letting vaccinated U.S. tourists in this summer. This website gives the current status of where you can travel. Places where U.S. tourists are allowed to travel, like Mexico, require a negative test when you enter and exit the country, which can be a little tedious.

I’m encouraging domestic travel! There are so many gems in the U.S., from the beaches of Hawaii (where I’m hoping to go this year) to incredible landscapes like National Parks (check out this list). If you need some inspiration, see my Destinations page.

Travel-Themed Books

If you’re looking for a way to feed your wanderlust and start dreaming about travel again, check out my post with recommendations and see this post with travel-themed books.

20 Travelers on the Green List

CN Traveller put together the Green List to recognize people who are activists for the earth. There is so much inspiration on this list!

Texas Castle

Did you know there’s a castle in Texas? Do you know the famous Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany which inspired the Disneyland castle? That was built by King Ludwig. He also drew up the plans for Castle Falkenstein but the building was never completed. A Texas architect and developer used the renderings and sketches to build this castle in the Hill Country and now it’s available to rent!

The Big Alaska Five

Alaskan moose, grizzly bear, caribou, grey wolf, and Dall sheep – that’s the Alaskan Big Five! (You probably have heard of the African big five: lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant, and Cape buffalo.) Learn more, like where to see them, in this post.

Arcology

I recently learned about arcology – the fusion of architecture and ecology and a creative way to think about how urban landscapes can exist with less disruption (low-impact) to the environment. Arcosanti is an experimental town in Arizona (near Prescott and about an hour north of Phoenix) that was developed in 1970. Yes, people still live here today, but it is also a tourist destination because of its unique architecture. See their website to learn more and view their Instagram for intriguing photos.

A New Book By Anthony Bourdain

Did you hear Anthony Bourdain has a new book coming out? It might seem a little strange since he didn’t contribute any words to this book, but his longtime assistant helped create this book. This guidebook, one he was getting ready to write before he passed, compiles Bourdain’s recommendations from his TV show episodes in 43 countries. I also recommend the Parts Unknown website to see Bourdain’s recommendations.

Wanderlust? Me too! My monthly Fearless Wanderlust posts will keep you informed about travel news and give you inspiration for your next trip.

The last time I posted a Fearless Wanderlust post was in July! We limited travel this summer and I’m sure many of you experienced the same. But we did go on a few getaways. We spent a few days in Wimberley and hung out in the Blanco River, we did a one-night staycation in downtown Austin for our anniversary, and we did a quick trip to Dallas for a wedding.

Travel for me has been local so far, but in a few days, I’ll be hopping on a plane for the first (and possibly only) time this year for a trip more than a year in the making, though we only recently decided to go for it. It’ll be very strange, as I am more risk-averse and have a bit of post-interaction anxiety when it comes to getting out in the world these days. But I’m looking forward to helping a friend celebrate his birthday and bringing tourism to a part of the U.S. city that needs it.

Americans Can Now Visit
Because of the U.S.’s inability to decrease cases, we’ve been barred from entering many countries around the world. But these countries are now open to U.S. citizens. Many require a negative test result to enter. I’ve seen a few people take advantage of cheaper flights to visit French Polynesia and the Caribbean is a shorter jump for a beach vacation.

French Polynesia
Speaking of French Polynesia, I met Fleming while traveling a few years ago and she and her husband took advantage of the cheaper options to visit. Here’s her post about the trip and budget tips.

National Parks Reopen
For those who want to travel domestically, here’s some information about National Parks and their status. For the most part, they are open with limited amenities.

Check Your Travel Insurance
Travel insurance is a big help when you have to cancel your trip, end up in the hospital during your trip, and a hundred different situations. It protects you and your assets so that you get the care and help you need. This post about travel insurance explains why it looks different than last year and why we should be more careful when we get it.

The Future of Travel
What does the future of travel look like? Give this post a read. I liked this quote the most: “It would take more than a pandemic to kill the desire for connection, to kill the thirst for novelty, and the drive to explore. Whether that’s right or wrong is subjective, but it is undeniably human nature.”

Where will you travel next?

P.S. The above picture is from my recent visit to Blue Hole Regional Park in Wimberley. If you’re looking for some local getaways, check out this post.
