Captivations is a monthly feature with links, stories, and news that captivated me. Take a look at all the things captivating me lately.
While it took 250 tons of raw food to feed the Olympic athletes, there was also a lot of waste. Chefs, including those well-known for their restaurant honors, joined together to take that waste and turn it into an opportunity to feed homeless people in Rio. What a creative and generous event!
Pay It Forward with Daniel Curtis
It was my third year of being a part of the Pay It Forward with Daniel Curtis event and again, they hit it out of the park! I’m always inspired by this passionate community that is improving and empowering the lives of those with spinal injuries. This event was created in 2011 as a fundraiser for Daniel Curtis who had a spinal injury. In the years that followed, Daniel has continued the event to raise money for the organizations that have changed his life forever. If you want to learn more, visit the event website.
Spa Day at Viva Day Spa
I FINALLY cashed in my awesome Christmas gift from my boo – a spa day at Viva Day Spa! It. Was. Amazing! It included a luxurious massage, facial, and pedicure. The spa is gorgeous, the team is so friendly and the whole experience was memorable. I felt so relaxed and my skin felt so good afterward. While Viva Day Spa has three locations, I choose the Domain location that opened in July. I highly recommend giving spa gift certificates as gifts and to treat yourself every once in a while!
My Side Project
Before this blog lived at this domain name, it lived at anitakc.com. This blog is now where I talk all things marketing, social media, and more. It’s been sporadic in the past but I’ve started making time for this side project. This blog is perfect for those who need 101 info about marketing. You can see a few new posts about branding, marketing and advertising up now.
One of the Best Olympic Stories
Did you enjoy watching the Olympic Games? I love this story about runners Abbey D’Agostino and Nikki Hamblin. They had fallen after D’Agostino clipped Hamblin. D’Agostino told Hamblin, who seemed to be laying on the track in defeat, “Get up. We have to finish this.” What if we lived life like that? Encouraging each other to press on?
Pattern Play DIY Macramé Party
I posted my latest party earlier this week – a fun pattern DIY macramé party. Party planning had been on a hiatus but planning this event charged me up! Head over to the post to see all the details!
What Happens When a Craft Brewery “Sells Out?”
This Serious Eats article details what happens when a craft brewery is acquired by a big name company like Anheuser-Busch In-Bev. No matter what industry, “acquired” feels like a bad thing. Processes could change, the focus becomes impersonal and the product quality is affected. This article illustrates the pros and cons when it happens to a craft brewery, following up on the acquisition of Goose Island Beer, a Chicago company, in 2011. I can understand the pros – an opportunity for wider distribution and more experimentation – but is it still “craft” at that level of production? What do you think?

When the Games are Over
What happens after the Olympic games or after an athlete retires? This insightful article gives a first-hand look from a bronze medalist of the 2008 games. As with any role in life, we sometimes become so empowered by and associated with that role we’re not sure what to do or who we are when that journey is over. That’s the beauty of life. We can mold our journey and create new journeys as we see fit. We don’t need to be tied down by what we have been or what people label us.
