Captivations is a monthly feature with links, stories, and news that captivated me. Take a look at all the things captivating me lately.
My friend Amy organized a workout and tasting at The Lab, a new workout studio in downtown Austin. This place is swanky! I love that it has ALL types of classes that I love: cardio/boot camp style, cycling, pilates/barre, and yoga.
We tried all four types with owner Beverly, and it was a sweaty morning! Afterwards, we enjoyed bites and drinks from The Honest Bar, their in-house juice and snack bar. If you’re in this area, I highly recommend making this place your workout studio!
The result of a recent controversial Bon Appetit video has opened up the food community to discuss how to approach unfamiliar cuisines in a culturally sensitive way. The lesson is to stop, listen, and learn. Read these responses in the Austin Chronicle to open your mind.
On Jealousy
I think jealousy is naturally developed. As we grow older, we want to become better people and better at our skills, so it’s easy to see others who are already there and feel jealousy. Also, our society is driven by insecurities and it plays on our jealousy. I loved this post by Hannah Brencher because it speaks clearly to something we don’t know how to deal with or talk about in our lives. Jealousy doesn’t magically go away. Sometimes the process is long and hard, but with conscious decisions and showing more love than fear in actions, maybe we can get past jealousy.
‘Color of Reality’
I saw this powerful art video this month. It features movement artists Jon Boogz and Lil Buck and art by Alexa Meade. Give it a watch below:
Small acts can have big impact. If you’re like me, you watch the news these days and think, what can I do to help? Start in your city and community. Here are 101 ideas from around the world to get you thinking.
Playing with Makeup
As you may have seen in this makeup and skin care post, my friend Ashley showed me and my friends some fun makeup products this month. I decided to buy the presenter’s kit to try more of their products. I know very little about makeup and stick to the same routine and products, but I’m looking forward to mastering some bolder looks and cultivating a better skin care routine.
“We will give him a family”
This story and video made the rounds this month after being released by the White House. The video (see below) features a 6-year-old American boy reading a letter he wrote to President Obama about the Syrian boy in the ambulance. Yep, get your tissues ready. Gosh, we have had a crazy and hard year, but as this video shows, there’s still hope and a bright future ahead.
Yep, you read that correctly. Check out these crazy good combinations on the Shari’s Berries website. Which is your favorite combination?
The Joys and Fears of Scuba Diving
I took my advanced scuba diving course this month, a year after doing my intro course. I was a big ball of nerves! For reference, an intro course allows you to go down to 60 feet and an advanced course allows you to go down to 120 feet. When you do an intro dive on vacation, it’s at an easy depth and the guides help you with every step. But learning how to plan and lead dives AND doing it in murky Lake Travis is scary! You can’t see an arms-length in front of you until about 80 feet deep. So many things went wrong during the three days in the lake and I didn’t sleep well for about a week and a half, but I’m a better diver because of the experience. Scuba diving still gives me a little anxiety, but I’m also excited to do more very soon! In November, I’ll be living on a small boat in Thailand for three days and scuba diving multiple times a day!
