Captivations is a monthly feature with links, stories, and news that captivated me. It’s also a monthly update/recap of what’s going on in my world. Here’s a summary for June 2023.
June Recap
A recurring reminder in my life as I reflect month to month is that moments with people I care about always seem to be the most memorable. I easily forget hard workouts, terrible traffic, and stressful days. But I keep track of (with help from my calendar) meals with friends, and I fondly think about those days.
I am also thankful I’m blessed to experience so much magic in life. Maybe it’s how I’ve trained myself to find delight in everything. Like how I took a pottery class back in February. The pots took months and they’re imperfect, but I made them, they’re colorful, and now have plants in them that I get to look at every day.
Marriage Advice
I liked this article with lessons learned about marriage. I still have a lot to learn and this was helpful.
Unschoolilng
Unschooling is living and learning outside the classroom, and I love this list of 10 things to do. Things like getting outside, reading recklessly, and starting a diary. The author recommends this list for summer, but I would recommend it all the time!
Black Maternal Health
Did you know the maternal mortality rate for Black women is 2.6 times the rate for White women? Why? The lack of attention by the medical community and thus, less education among people. This piece by Allyson Felix, the most decorated U.S. track and field athlete of all time, honors her teammate Tori Bowie, a 32-year-old who died from childbirth complications.
Soft Ambition
Having it all, hustle, and burnout are some common terms when it comes to talking about working women. We’ve worked for what ambition looks like to others and on a resume. Now, it’s time to redefine ambition for yourself. It’s time for soft ambition. This article in Marie Claire describes the situation well.
How Do You Measure a Year
A father recorded a yearly interview with his daughter on her birthday, and the compilation of 18 years of interviews has become a sweet documentary. What a great way to mark the occasion.
No Mosquitoes
Mosquitos are here and I hate it. Here’s a trick to repel mosquitoes – use coffee grounds! Have you tried this?
Recycling Glass
I found a company called Remark Glass and they create glassware by molding old bottles. Think wine bottles being turned into bowls or a new type of cup. Take a look at their website.
Beyond Stereotypes
Did you catch any memorable graduation speeches this year? Jordan Pierre, student of Syracuse University has gone viral with his speech. My favorite line: “I challenge us all here today to denounce the stereotypes we have of one another, for the problem with stereotypes is not that they are untrue but incomplete.”
