June Recap
This was a crazy month! It started with three days of jury duty and ended with seven days on the beach. In between were multiple birthday celebrations and many good meals, including a cake potluck by my friend Claire. It was a delicious event with 18 cakes with talks about making this a regular thing. Remember when I threw a cake potluck for my birthday? It’s a great idea for dessert lovers!
Family Legacies
I’ve been following food blogger Kristina of Eat Cho Food for a while now. Kristina and I have some similarities. We both have Cantonese heritage, Chinese restaurant history in our families, and have a desire to connect with our heritage through food. Her post about making joong illustrates that desire well and echoes sentiments I’ve been thinking about. Is it important to carry on our family legacies – stories and recipes – and how do we do that? What does that mean to me personally? Oof, that is a deep subject that I don’t want to touch but I know will hurt even more if I don’t consider it now. I hope you don’t know what I mean, but if you do, my inbox is open.
Tom Hiddleston and Anna Sawai
We recently finished watching the show Shōgun (recommend but know you’ll be reading subtitles), and I really liked the character development. Anna Sawai plays one of the main characters and I enjoyed this conversation she had with Tom Hiddleston, who plays Loki in the Marvel universe. It was interesting to read how actors connect with their characters and bring them to life.
Viral Croissants
As a pastry lover, this article about the evolution of croissant trends was fun. First, the cronut to now, croissant supreme, croissant stuffed with cookie dough, and the smashed croissant. Read more about it in this Food & Wine article.
Newsletter Recommendation
I loved Suleika Jaouad’s memoir Between Two Kingdoms and recently found her newsletter The Isolation Journals. This space is full of thoughtfulness, vulnerability, and heartfelt insights. This edition “On Caregiving and Conjuring” tells the story of John Brinkley and his letters to his late wife.
