Captivations is a monthly feature with links, stories, and news that captivated me. It’s also a monthly update/recap of what’s going on in my world.
It’s All Happening
I have been brainstorming fitness goals. After a year of very little working out (other than walking with Kaira every morning), it feels really good to be getting a regular sweat again. I did my last month of ClassPass, which I had been doing since 2016! I’m now doing OrangeTheory and hoping to add in running. Do you have any specific fitness goals?
I sent out my first monthly newsletter! I’ve had this long on my project list, and I’m excited to explore this medium. It’s an extension of my blog, and I’m sharing some behind-the-scenes. If you want to join, subscribe here.
This month was about finding another normal. Dinner parties with friends, dining out, hanging out at a bar, and even working a booth at an expo. These events felt strange yet it was a welcome familiarity. I’ve had less anxiety than I thought I would, so it feels good!
Social Media Changes Your Brain
The ways social media changes your brain is not all bad, as seen in this article, but it’s more bad than good. Impacting your mental health, your ability to think objectively, and your grasp on reality are pretty big things.
Childfree Women
This New York Times article introduced me to We Are Childfree, a website resource and community for women who have chosen to be childfree. Its mission is to normalize the choice to live childfree by sharing stories from women. It is a beautiful thing to be a mother, but not everyone is called to be one. I don’t think women should be pressured to have kids or should be seen as less worthy if she chooses not to have kids, especially since birth rates are still on the decline.
What Do You Regret
A photographer started a project that evolved into sharing the regrets of strangers. Here’s an NPR article about it and here’s the Instagram account where you can see the images. I don’t have very many regrets. I mentioned a few of them in this post. I think if I were to go back and change something I could regret, I wouldn’t be where I am today.
Best Skincare
My face is in the best state of my life because I’ve worn less makeup in the last year and I’ve been working on improving my skin in the last few years. (Remember this post?) My friend Janna is an expert on skincare and it shows! Check out her post on what she uses.
No New Clothes
I’ve taken Remake’s No New Clothes pledge! From now until Sept. 1, I’m buying nothing new or only secondhand. Why? To reduce my carbon footprint, limit the waste I send to the landfill, and keep my money away from companies that hurt people and the planet. Learn more on the Remake website.
Other than the ski jacket and socks I bought a few months ago (for this trip), I’m aiming for a year of no new clothes, and 90 days is a good place to start. I’ve seen that wanting to buy new clothes can be deeper than the clothes themselves. It’s self-esteem telling me I will look prettier and be more likable if I wear a certain thing. It’s boredom telling me I need something new. Have you ever thought about this?
The Importance of Being Right
This article speaks for itself and everyone should read it! Finding a way through the fear of failure and humiliation would solve a lot of things.
