Captivations is a monthly feature with links, stories, and news that captivated me. It’s also a monthly update/recap of what’s going on in my world.
Fall Things
Have you been doing all the fall things? I have! I’ve crossed off a few of the things on this fall bucket list. I see some baking in my future.
Fantastic Fungi
Have you watched the Fantastic Fungi documentary on Netflix? It’s an interesting look at the mycelium network that maintains the health of our earth. There are cool time-lapse shots in the documentary and this article explains how that was done.
Sound of Simplicity
This podcast episode was a good one. One thing that stuck out was the answer to this question: “If you’re living a life that aligns with your values, why would it be necessary to take a vacation from it to find solace and silence?”
“The music is music because of the pauses…otherwise it’s just noise. Even if you live a life that you feel is meaningful and enjoyable all the time, if there isn’t a rhythm to that, you can get burnt out. It’s just like playing the same note over and over again…Vacation is running towards something, not running away from something.”
Burnout and The Great Resignation
This was a good read. It explains that burnout happens when things (like work) fail to live up to our expectations. The “easy” solution: prioritize joy and understand work is just work. I’ve been feeling it lately and I’ve felt it before, which reminds me of this post I wrote about it.
Watching Sunsets
On a theme with the above topics, I wondered why vacation life was so much better than day-to-day life. Could it be sunsets? According to a study, appreciating the beauty of a sunset, something I do a lot more of on vacation, improves a person’s mental wellbeing.
Flow Theory
How do you find the sweet spot? How do you reach a state of flow? It’s between skill and challenge, boredom and anxiety. Here’s a good diagram and explanation for it.
Social Comparison Theory
This diagram about social comparison theory made me think. It shows the differences between jealousy, motivation, scorn, and gratitude. The post also shares a solution to the toxic effects of comparison.
Texas Craft Brewers Festival
This happened in Austin and it was so fun! More than 50 breweries from all around Texas showed up to share their beer and I loved trying them. (This post is about a previous year’s event.) My favorite tasting was the Pyrite NEIPA by Pondaseta Brewing from Amarillo.
5 Things I Love Lately
- Vacation – Having a break is very necessary! I’m glad we did some traveling the last two months. (This post is the only one about Hawaii so far but I’m working on more!)
- Rollercoasters – One of our vacations included a day at Universal Studios Orlando. Seeing all the Harry Potter sections was lots of fun and the Velocicoaster is the CRAZIEST ride I’ve ever been on.
- These under and above water photos
- Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings – It was a good movie
- Can you believe this croissant lamp? It’s a real croissant!
