The Mosaic Workshop in Austin is the perfect place to get crafty! This post shares all the details.
If you’re looking for an easy way to craft for a few hours, I’ve got you. I won a charity raffle for a mosaic workshop, and my friend Kathy and I dropped in.

Mosaic Workshop
The Mosaic Workshop is an art studio in East Austin. They have scheduled intro classes every week if you need extra instruction, but you can also drop-in 11 am to 6 pm daily. Space is first-come, first-served, and weekends are the busiest times, but it’s a big studio.

We are fairly proficient in crafting, so we were confident we could figure it out with a little instruction from their team. For drop-ins, their instructors give you a run-down of what to do and help you get started. Instructors also walk around to answer questions and give tips.

The studio has plenty of inspiration on their walls and plentiful supplies to make your vision come to life. The pricing comes from the size of your base and range from $25 to $45+. That price includes all your materials and time. They have a large variety of panel shapes and sizes and it can vary week to week.
I recommend brainstorming a design or two and knowing your vision before arriving to save some time. Here’s an example of the different ways you can lay out your tile!

How to Make a Mosaic
Let me walk you through the mosaic process. For reference, I spent about 5 leisurely hours creating my 8-inch circle piece. I spent almost 2 hours ideating (I did not plan a design ahead of time) and gathering materials before starting to glue down my tiles. We definitely took our time.

First, pick your base. As you can see, there are lots of shapes to choose from!

Then, I sketched out my design and considered my color options. There are lots of tile types and color options, so that can take some time.

When you’re ready, you’ll start gluing your tiles down to your base. I kept my border and flower tiles as they were (square tiles), while the blue tiles I chose different tile types and cut different sizes for a more varied look.

After everything is glued down, you can take a grout kit home with you ($15) or you can have the studio grout it for you ($25).

The grout kit comes with video instruction, and I thought it was easy to follow. It took about 20 minutes for me to grout my piece. I painted the edge of my piece instead of grouting it for a cleaner look.

I love my finished piece so much! And we had a fun time chatting and crafting together. I can’t wait to go back!
