I’ve always been a lover of dessert, but ever since dining at Room 4 Dessert in Indonesia, I’ve been throwing around this idea of “dessert meals” in my head. It would involve ordering every dessert on the menu at a restaurant. 😀 Now, I have limits on how much dessert I can take (and dining out budget), but I’m hoping to roll with the idea and see where it takes me.
My first dessert tasting features a somewhat new restaurant. Little Ola’s Biscuits moved into their location on Wells Branch in North Austin a few months ago. Previously, it had been Olamaie’s pandemic pivot and possibly one of the tastiest pivots in town. Olamaie, a Downtown Austin restaurant serving Southern cuisine, took their love and expertise in biscuits and made Little Ola’s Biscuits a to-go favorite.
On the savory side, their fried chicken biscuit sandwich (regular or spicy) is a must-order! The pimento cheese biscuit and biscuits and gravy are two of my other favorites.
But I know you want to know about dessert! Which dessert? The correct answer is all of them but if you’re trying to be responsible, let’s break it down together.
Here’s more info on the six dessert options at Little Ola’s Biscuits.
Biscuit Cinnamon Roll
Let’s start with the obvious choice – the cinnamon roll. It’s biscuit dough rolled in cinnamon sugar and then covered in cream cheese frosting. As with biscuit texture, the edges are a bit crispier than a regular cinnamon roll, so make sure you’ve got cream cheese covering all the parts. (You can get a 3 oz side of cream cheese frosting just to be sure for $2.) The middle of the cinnamon roll always makes it worth it! ($5)
Baby Elvis Biscuit
Ah yes, the classic Elvis sandwich. Named after Elvis Presley, the sandwich features his favorite combo of peanut butter and bananas. This mini biscuit sandwich is recommended “for kids or the young at heart,” which confirms to me that this can be ordered for dessert. I warn you, the sandwich doesn’t look as tantalizing in person, but thank you, marketing team, for the beautiful bruleed banana photo on the menu. ($4.50)
Hand Pie
Continuing right on the Southern theme, these fried hand pies are a unique offering at Little Ola’s! The filling is seasonal, as I enjoyed a peach filling and they now have a dark chocolate pudding filling. The vanilla glaze covering the crust makes it extra delectable. ($5)
Chocolate Chip Cookie
You’ll always have people who rarely sway from what they like and it’s a good thing Little Ola’s has a solid chocolate chip cookie. The thick and somewhat fluffy cookie has plenty of chocolate chips and a sprinkling of sea salt on top. ($2.50)
Oatmeal Raisin Cookie
The most underrated cookie and YES, I’m an oatmeal raisin cookie fan. Some people say oatmeal raisin is a “waste of a cookie,” but they don’t have the sophisticated taste buds to appreciate the texture of oats and the subtle sweetness of raisins. Little Ola’s version is chewy and rich with cinnamon and vanilla flavors. It tastes like fall in a cookie! ($2.50)
Jumbles
Is it cake or cookie? The baking world says cookie yet the texture is fluffy like cake, which makes this cookie the best of both worlds. This soft cookie has plenty of rainbow sprinkles for a slight crunch. (2 cookies for $4)
Choosing a dessert depends on my mood, but my favorite dessert here is the hand pie followed by the jumbles. I don’t think you could go wrong with any of the desserts though!
Which dessert would you choose?
