10 Coolest Buildings Around the World
Some of my favorite buildings are located in Spain – Sagrada Familia, Mezquita, Alhambra, Metropol Parasol (pictured above; Photo by Adrianna Calvo from Pexels) – to name a few. The Mezquita is on this list and there are some other interesting buildings. Do you have one that you would add?
The Cyclists and the ISIS Militants
This past July, Jay Austin and Lauren Geoghegan were on day 369 of their biking trip around the world when they were run down and murdered by ISIS militants in Tajikistan. This heart-breaking New York Times article gives more details. They shared their adventures on their blog Simply Cycling, and while not everything on their trip was picture-perfect, they believed people were kind.
Would You Take a Mystery Trip?
Intrepid Travel offered a 2,200 mile, 22-day mystery trip through Central Asia costing $5,650 per person and all 10 spots were taken! The only details are they’ll be starting in Kazakhstan and ending in Mongolia, staying in small villages, and eating interesting food. Would you take a mystery trip like this?
TripAdvisor’s Big Month
TripAdvisor was in the headlines several times this month. First, a man in Italy that sold fake TripAdvisor reviews was given a nine-month jail sentence. This is big for websites with online reviews and sets a precedent that will hopefully dissuade the practice of fake reviews. The other big news is TripAdvisor will be moving from user content to professional reviews. I know user reviews are many times bias to their frame of reference and sometimes emotionally driven, but I think reviews from real people have weight. Professional reviews can be more critical and detailed but also have the potential to decrease the engagement and community on the site.
Inca Trail vs Quarry Trail
Machu Picchu is on my long list of travel destinations, and hiking the Inca Trail takes a lot of advance planning since it books up very fast. The alternative Quarry Trail is similar but much less crowded. Here’s a breakdown if you’re thinking about hiking in Peru.
More About Passport Privilege
I shared about passport privilege a few months ago. If you want to learn more, check out this video.
Visit Vilnius, Lithuania
This provocative ad campaign for the capital of Lithuania went live and is turning heads, especially religious folks since the Pope is supposed to visit soon. Using the slogan of “G-spot of Europe,” Vilnius is supposedly amazing once you find where it is.
Greenland
The current hot travel spot might be Iceland, but its next-door island Greenland has some worthwhile features. It’s my feature destination for you this month! What can people do in Greenland? Kayak, hike, mountain climb, dog sled, cross country ski, and take boat tours, to name a few things. You’ll also be able to discover the Inuit culture and learn about Vikings. Are you cold just thinking about Greenland? Me too, but I hope one day I can visit the largest island in the world!
10 Fastest-Growing Travel Destinations
This is an interesting list showing year-over-year growth. There are a couple of places I’m surprised to see on the list but I’m also surprised Iceland is not first on the list! Which of these places would you visit?
