Wanderlust? Me too! My quarterly Fearless Wanderlust posts will keep you informed about travel news and give you inspiration for your next trip.
Phew, it’s been a while since you’ve seen a Fearless Wanderlust post here! As you know, there wasn’t a lot of big travel going on last year. If you’re like me, you probably enjoyed some nearby road trips to spacious locations with outdoor activities. But, the country continues to open up and the beauty of U.S. destinations, especially National Parks, are hot destinations! Here are some of my suggestions for U.S. destinations to plan a trip in the next year:
- Day Trips and Getaways from Austin
- Big Bend National Park before it gets too hot
- Marfa and Terlingua when you’re going to Big Bend
- Enchanted Rock and Fredericksburg if you’re looking for somewhere closer to Austin
- Napa for a Fall Vacation
Let’s Go Skiing
We visited Telluride last month and it was a fun trip! (That’s where the top photo is from.) We were mostly beginner skiers but we all enjoyed the time trying out the slopes, enjoying the mountains, and taking a trip. Read all about that trip in this post.
Future Travel
Are you planning any trips this year? The E.U. announced this week that they will be letting vaccinated U.S. tourists in this summer. This website gives the current status of where you can travel. Places where U.S. tourists are allowed to travel, like Mexico, require a negative test when you enter and exit the country, which can be a little tedious.
I’m encouraging domestic travel! There are so many gems in the U.S., from the beaches of Hawaii (where I’m hoping to go this year) to incredible landscapes like National Parks (check out this list). If you need some inspiration, see my Destinations page.
Travel-Themed Books
If you’re looking for a way to feed your wanderlust and start dreaming about travel again, check out my post with recommendations and see this post with travel-themed books.
20 Travelers on the Green List
CN Traveller put together the Green List to recognize people who are activists for the earth. There is so much inspiration on this list!
Texas Castle
Did you know there’s a castle in Texas? Do you know the famous Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany which inspired the Disneyland castle? That was built by King Ludwig. He also drew up the plans for Castle Falkenstein but the building was never completed. A Texas architect and developer used the renderings and sketches to build this castle in the Hill Country and now it’s available to rent!
The Big Alaska Five
Alaskan moose, grizzly bear, caribou, grey wolf, and Dall sheep – that’s the Alaskan Big Five! (You probably have heard of the African big five: lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant, and Cape buffalo.) Learn more, like where to see them, in this post.
Arcology
I recently learned about arcology – the fusion of architecture and ecology and a creative way to think about how urban landscapes can exist with less disruption (low-impact) to the environment. Arcosanti is an experimental town in Arizona (near Prescott and about an hour north of Phoenix) that was developed in 1970. Yes, people still live here today, but it is also a tourist destination because of its unique architecture. See their website to learn more and view their Instagram for intriguing photos.
A New Book By Anthony Bourdain
Did you hear Anthony Bourdain has a new book coming out? It might seem a little strange since he didn’t contribute any words to this book, but his longtime assistant helped create this book. This guidebook, one he was getting ready to write before he passed, compiles Bourdain’s recommendations from his TV show episodes in 43 countries. I also recommend the Parts Unknown website to see Bourdain’s recommendations.
