My goodness! So many good eats this month. I tried Snooze Eatery, Soup Peddler, Emmer & Rye, NG BMT, Skull & Cakebones, Bohemian Barbecue and Hay Elotes for the first time and all were good! Check out my June flavors in detail below.
National Donut Day
Started out June strong by celebrating National Donut Day, which in my opinion, should be more than a once in a year occurrence. Pink frosting with sprinkles are always the prettiest and my other favorite are blueberry cake donuts! This donut is from Ken’s Donuts.
Sticky Bun and Quiche at Contigo
We celebrated my friend Abby’s birthday with brunch at Contigo! The meal started out sweet with a sticky bun and I loved this quiche with chopped green beans and mushrooms! The egg was light and smooth.
Breakfast Pot Pie at Snooze Eatery
Snooze Eatery, a Denver original, opened their first two Austin locations this month. I tried their north location and enjoyed their Breakfast Pot Pie. Flaky pastry with sausage gravy and a sunny side up egg. The cappuccino was one of the best I have, though I’m not a big coffee drinker. If you want breakfast options galore, visit Snooze!
Soup, Juice, and Grilled Cheese at Soup Peddler
For June’s Austin Food Blogger Alliance Happy Hour, we indulged in healthy eats at Soup Peddler, an Austin favorite. I’m surprised and bummed that it has taken me this long to try this place because everything was fantastic. They have soups (warm and cold), juices, smoothies, and sandwiches on their menu and my favorites were:
- Righteous Brother Juice (cucumber, pineapple, cilantro, lime)
- Afternoon Delight Juice (beet, watermelon, pineapple, ginger, lemon, mint, maca, rosewater)
- Mulligatawny Soup (curried lentil and vegetable soup with cauliflower and green apple, thickened with coconut milk)
- Turkey Sandwich with cilantro pesto, spinach and pepper jack
Pizza at Via313
This month I featured Via313 as one of my favorite Austin eats. This Detroit-style pizza has caramelized cheese in its crust and their new brick-and-mortar makes pizza-eating even easier. Check out the full post here.
Mango Hill at Hay Elotes
This gigantic dessert is a play off of the traditional chili mango treat. Mango ice with strawberries and chili powder make this a total brain freeze and a cool dessert for two people.
Peached Horchata Trifle from Skull & Cakebones and Tequila 512
I spotted these trifle mason jars in line at Whole Foods and had to get one. This one was Tequila 512-infused spice cake with horchata frosting and tequila peach jam. Yes, it is as delicious as it sounds. Loved the flavors! Skull & Cakebones is a vegan bakery in Austin and have partnered with a handful of companies to make different trifles. Find out where they’re selling near you!
Grilled Pork Banh Mi from NG BMT
I was excited to finally try NG BMT after hearing about their delicious banh mi sandwiches. It’s one of the most popular banh mi places in Austin. I tried their grilled pork although I usually go for the traditional. It was juicy and flavorful! I would definitely go back to try more.
Dinner at VOX Table
It’s been about a year since we visited VOX Table for the first time and the fact remains the same: it’s still our favorite restaurant in Austin! Some of the dishes we loved: smoked Hamachi pipette, albacore tuna tartare, b+b, grilled quail and peaches, and the ginger donut dessert. Whenever I eat the b+b (we had it last year and at several events also), my eyes roll to the back of my head in delight. Their grilled quail and peaches dish was incredibly on point. The flavors go perfectly together and you must go try it this summer! You can’t go wrong with their cocktails either. My recommendation is the #delicious.
Dinner at Emmer & Rye
We finally tried Emmer & Rye after months of anticipation. The restaurant and their chef have been awarded top award after top award in the last year so expectations were high. It’s a cute, little restaurant in a slightly strange place – Rainey Street. We tried these dishes: beef tartare, kale and chevre salad, corn johnny cake, spaghetti squash in onion butter, shrimp crème fraiche cracker, mackerel dish, crawfish dish and the rotolo. The rotolo, shrimp crème fraiche cracker, and spaghetti squash were my favorites! At the end of the meal we decided it was a good meal but there weren’t any dishes that were astounding to the point of returning, which was very surprising.
Brisket Frito Pie at Bohemian Barbecue
During our brewery crawl recently, we enjoyed this brisket frito pie from the Bohemian Barbecue food trailer. Yum! Tender brisket piled on top of Fritos and topped with barbecue sauce and shredded cheese. A perfect dish to accompany beer.
Pies at Tiny Pies
I always love the treats at Tiny Pies. This time I got Pecan, Turtle, Strawberry Basil and Blueberry. All great!
