Flavors of the Month is a monthly feature of some of the best dishes and restaurants I enjoyed.
Happy Hour at Uchiko
I started the month out right with sake social at Uchiko with my friend Janna. She might be a fashion blogger but she’s also a foodie. Guys. Happy hour at Uchiko is legit. Nigiri and hama chili are always good. We liked the pajeon also. The jasmine cream dessert was divine! I also recommend the sake collins. With everything $8 and under, this is the best way to ball on a budget.
Lunch at Old Thousand
I was very impressed with my first time at Old Thousand! For lunch, we got the house egg roll, tomatillo steam buns, forbidden rice salad, orange chicken, stir-fried flat noodles, and black pepper tofu. We finished off this delicious meal with dessert: coconut shaved ice on chocolate cake.
Bulgogi Rice Bowl at Korean Komfort
It’s been a while since the first time I had Korean Komfort. I think it was when they were first opening during SXSW years ago. I tried the pork bulgogi rice bowl and I also got the appetizer sampler that came with mandoo (dumplings), Korean fried wings, and fried kim mari (seaweed spring roll). You can’t go wrong with dumplings and I had never tasted fried kim mari before but I’m a fan.
Magic Fruit Party
Did you read about the magic fruit party I threw this month? Magic fruit changes the flavors of foods. Read all the details here.
Cilantro Bowl at Ranch Hand
Say hello to a new food truck in town! Ranch Hand is all about bowls with ingredients that are sourced locally. I got the Cilantro bowl with ground bison meatballs, avocado, mixed greens, white radish, cucumber, cilantro, black beans, and grilled corn. It comes with a lime-jalapeno vinaigrette. Thumbs up! I wish I could eat this for lunch every day!
Kolaches and Klobasneks at Batch Craft Beer and Kolaches
Brisket klobasnek, yes. (Technically, klobasneks are savory, kolaches are sweet, though a lot of times we say kolache for both.) I also loved their apple streusel kolache and sausage and cheese. This is a spacious shop tucked on the east side that would be perfect for meeting up with friends for beer AND kolaches. They also have a hefty selection of beers to-go.
Tacos at Tyson’s Tacos (Complimentary Austin Food Bloggers Alliance Happy Hour)
For our happy hour this month, Austin Food Bloggers Alliance was invited to Tyson’s Tacos for a complimentary tasting. This was my second time at Tyson’s and I liked it! The queso is good, and I would order the duck taco and pork taco again. They’re a quirky little restaurant that loves customer suggestions. They have many customer-suggested tacos on their menu. I’ll be back!
Baked Goods at Lick 6th Anniversary Bake Sale
You know I love their ice cream! Lick uses a handful of baked goods in their ice cream and has a talented team, so they hosted a bake sale as part of their 6th-anniversary celebration. I was lucky to get in early as media and bought a pecan sticky bun, gluten-free brownie, blondie, and apple caramel muffin. All were SO good! The pecan sticky bun was my favorite, per usual. I hope they have more of these bake sales in the future!
Dinner at 101 by Teahaus (Soft Opening)
Teahaus, a place for boba drinks and snacks, opened a new restaurant called 101 by Teahaus! I went the first day of soft opening, so this is a very fresh impression as they were still working out kinks and figuring things out. But from my experience, they’re on the right path! I loved the beef noodle soup, sweet potato fries, and of course, their popular basil fried chicken. I also had a melon cocktail that has sake and a melon popsicle! This is a great little spot that I’ll definitely come back to.
Happy Hour at Mongers
I went to Mongers for brunch a while back but I was so happy to try their happy hour. After going for brunch, I consistently hear great things about Mongers. This is a place to go if you love seafood! Their happy hour has $6 snacks that are very satisfying. The buttermilk fried gulf shrimp was my favorite but close behind were the ahi poke tacos, smoked fish dip, roasted shishito peppers, and peel and eat cold shrimp. We basically ordered one of everything and it was the best choice.
Craft Beer at Celis Brewery
I visited Celis Brewery again (they opened this past summer) since they brought back their Grand Cru Tripel this month. It’s a solid beer but I still like their Citrus Grandis IPA more.
