Flavors of the Month: January 2019

Dinner at Charm Korean BBQ
We are pretty limited on good Korean food in Austin, but we heard this place was good. When we arrived, the wait for barbecue section was a 45-minute wait, so we settled for the regular menu. We ordered the typical dishes – kimchi pancake, beef bulgogi, and bibimbob – and loved all of them. Now we have to make it back for the barbecue, which starts at $25 per person, all you can eat!

Breakfast at Round Rock Donuts
The infamous Round Rock Donuts is known for their yellow/orange-colored donuts, which comes from their secret recipe heavy with egg yolks. Their two-pound, 18-inch Texas-sized donut has been featured in viral videos. I’ve had their donuts before but had never actually been to the store. I got some of their donut holes, cake donuts, and a cupcake. All good! I actually think I like their glazed donuts when they’ve cooled.

Lunch at Haru Sushi
Hanabi quietly turned into Haru, and my friend and I stopped in spontaneously during our day of wedding dress shopping. The bento box was so good and plenty of food.

Lunch at Poke House
Poke is in Austin and abundant! I tried out a new-to-me spot – Poke House in Northwest Austin. Poke always seems to satisfy a craving. Poke House does a great job with options and sauces. I liked my experience here.

Happy Hour at Sushi Zushi (Complimentary)
We had our first Austin Food Blogger Alliance board meeting of the year at Sushi Zushi on 5th Street and they treated us to a few dishes. This salmon tower was tasty.

Happy Hour at Bar Peached
Okonomiyaki Fries, Charred Brussel Sprouts, Draft Cocktail, Cheese Corn, and Tacos. This is how to do social hour! Bar Peached is the new restaurant from the Peached Tortilla team, and for social hour they have $6 cocktails and glasses of wine, $5 draft beers and snacks. We didn’t forget bingsu (Korean shaved ice dessert). This one has cake ice cream, birthday cake, whipped cream, sprinkles, and mochi. We also liked the matcha even though the flavor was subtle.

Beer at Altstadt Brewery in Fredericksburg
Did you see our recent stay in Fredericksburg? We stopped by the new brewery while we were there. This place focuses on German beers like lager, alt, and kolsh. Not my favorite brewery but a great option when you’re in Fredericksburg.

Lady M Matcha Crepe Cake
Lady M, the popular Japanese-French bakery, hosted a pop-up in Austin and my friends and I pitched in to get a cake. Their decadent mille crepe cakes are 20 crepe layers with light pastry cream between each layer. We got the green tea version with powdered matcha on top. This cake was so light and fluffy!
