Flavors of the Month is a monthly feature of some of the dishes and restaurants I enjoyed. Check out this post for restaurant and menu recommendations!
It’s a big list this month, so please read this when you’re not hungry or you’ll be regretting it! 😛
What’s it like as a food blogger? Broke but not hungry. All for the research but more for the love of food and trying new restaurants. As I talked about in my blogger anniversary post, I buy most of my own food unless I call out that it was a tasting or complimentary, which is necessary because of ethics and FTC rules. As always, even if something is complimentary, I’ll still give my honest opinion.
I’m curious about the new (or new-to-me) restaurants in town, and I’m happy to keep you in-the-know of where to go have an excellent dining experience! I hope you try somewhere/something new this month!
Dinner at Regal Ravioli
I’ve been trying out some new food trailers, as much as I can in this Texas heat, and I loved the mushroom and goat cheese ravioli at Regal Ravioli! I have seriously dreamed about it all month. Go find this trailer in South Austin and try their pastas.
Brunch at Peached Tortilla (Complimentary)
I tagged along with my friend Amy for brunch at Peached Tortilla. Their event “Milkshakes, Burgers, and Bubbles” happens every first Sunday of the month and features some special menu items in addition to their brunch menu. This milkshake we tried had a Round Rock donut and Pop Rocks! Their Japajam burger is SO GOOD!
Dessert at Cow Tipping Creamery
Cow Tipping Creamery, a place on my cold treats list, celebrated its 2nd anniversary with this special stacker. It’s got birthday cake soft serve, funfetti cake, pink velvet cake, birthday cake crumble, white chocolate sauce, and edible glitter. I’m pretty sure all birthdays deserve this happy creation.
Homemade Cinnamon Tres Leches
For my summer fiesta, I make my favorite tres leches cake. It’s got Cinnamon Toast Crunch in and on top of it.
Happy Hour at Hank’s
There’s a reason why Hank’s hashtag is #HappieratHanks. Because maybe it’s true. This darling restaurant was bustling on a weeknight, and it must be their great happy hour menu: $5 frozen and tap cocktails, $5 tap wine, $1 off beer, and half-price appetizers. Cheese and charcuterie board plus French fries make a fine dinner!
Lunch at 101 by TeaHaus
I’m pretty sure I love every dish at 101 by TeaHaus. I sure do love these three. Spicy wontons, kimchi fries, and Thai basil fried chicken. Read more about the dishes I like here.
Snow Ice at Snowy Village Dessert Café
I love me some snow ice, which is a cold, milk-based dessert. Snowy Village is a new place in the Crescent shopping center, the same one as the 99 Ranch Supermarket and 85 Degrees Bakery. This mango topped small cup was good. You can find my favorite snow ice in Austin here.
Bubble Tea at Sharetea (Complimentary)
Sharetea opened in Austin and they invited me in to try their drinks and celebrate! This mango milk green tea was awesome. Plus, my friend Kathy created their mural! For more boba options in Austin, check out this new post.
Poke at Ola Poke (Complimentary)
Austin’s local poke restaurant has opened up a location in North Austin, next door to Sharetea. We got to pop in after boba tea to try the restaurant. I love salmon, tuna, edamame, seaweed salad, and mango in my poke bowls. This is one of my favorite poke places in Austin. Have you tried poke?
Dinner at Lotus + Cleaver
This new spot on Rock Rose at the Domain serves Chinese food and its original location is in Miami. It’s an option if you’re craving Chinese food and walking around in the Domain, but otherwise, my first impression was lacking, though maybe I have high standards from eating a lot of great Chinese food growing up. You will probably enjoy your meal more at Szechuan House a few minutes away or some of my favorite Chinese restaurants in Austin.
Ramen at Jinya Ramen Bar
What I can recommend on Rock Rose is this ramen restaurant! Jinya Ramen Bar is an international (also in Canada) chain. I had the tonkotsu black, which was delish! If you’re not a ramen fan, they have other options on their menu for you.
Drinks from Austin Cocktails
Every time I have Austin Cocktails at events or parties, I wonder why I haven’t bought any yet. It’s so dang easy! Directions: Pour over ice, garnish if you feel like it. I’m all about the Ruby Red.
Popsicles at Steel City Pops
It’s slightly embarrassing how long it has taken me to try Steel City Pops, but I crossed it off my list this month and went all out for my first pop. We’ve got two locations in Austin now. I got a strawberry pop, dipped in dark chocolate, topped with cookie crumbles, and drizzled in white chocolate. Yep, it was as magical as it sounds. Of course, you can get your pop plain too.
Lunch at Better Half Coffee & Cocktails
This is a new, casual spot on West 5th St. My favorite dish was the waffle iron hashbrowns drizzled with coffee and cream gravy and soon to be drizzled with farm egg, and also starring asadero (cheese), pickled onions, and scallions. We also had the amazing cauliflower tots with beet ketchup, five spice donut, beignets, and the breakfast sandwich. Definitely a cute, quick spot to check out!
Lunch at Bird Bird Biscuit
Oh yay! This fried chicken thigh biscuit sandwich called Queen Beak was a big win this month. I’ve been hearing a bunch about Bird Bird Biscuit and I loved it! The bacon-infused chipotle mayo is the perfect accompaniment too. When you go, save room for some dough-doughs, the cinnamon sugar biscuit balls!
Summer Drinks at TeaHaus (Complimentary)
TeaHaus has some new summer drinks and milk tea ice cream on the menu! They invited me in to try the yogurt lemonades and fruit smoothies. The mixed berry smoothie and strawberry yogurt lemonade were my favorites, plus the milk tea ice cream was refreshing. They also have a tropical smoothie and original and blueberry yogurt lemonades.
