Austin restaurants and dishes are featured in my monthly Flavors of the Month posts. Check out this post for recommendations on where to eat next!
The last two months have been pretty low-key when it comes to eating. Not counting all our food adventures in Indonesia, we’ve been making lots of quick dinners at home, even on the weekends. That’s not only great for our budget post-wedding and honeymoon spending, but it’s been a good re-set for a normal and healthy diet. The weather has gotten chilly, so I’m sure there will be plenty of Instant Pot and slow cooker meals in the next few months!
Dinner at DipDipDip Tatsu-ya
I went to this shabu-shabu (hot pot) restaurant twice recently. I liked it so much, it got its own post, so check it out on the blog. In short, the experience and food are fantastic, and I recommend you try this interactive dining. No worries if you’re intimidated; the servers help you throughout the whole process.
Dessert at DipDipDip Ice Cream
Next to their new restaurant is a new ice cream shop! We tried the Sum Yum Yuzu, which has black pepper-yuzu mascarpone ice cream. They have some interesting flavor combinations that I hope to come back and try.
Dinner at Uroko
We dined at Uroko for their omakase dinner in August and I tried their lunch in September. If you like sushi, you need to give this restaurant a try. See this post for all the details.
Pastries from Julie Myrtille Bakery
Soon, we’ll be able to get Julie Myrtille’s pastries at her new bakery, but until then, they’re a tasty stop when visiting the farmers market. The almond croissant is a must-try, especially when it’s warm.
Me & The Bees Lemonade
I attended a Visit Austin event and Mikaila Ulmer, the teen entrepreneur behind this local lemonade company, was the speaker. We got to try some of the lemonade flavors, sweetened by honey, as she told us her story. You might have seen her on Shark Tank, and she’s had a fun journey of growing the company since then. Find the lemonade in a grocery store near you!
Dinner at Sugar Pine
Back at Sugar Pine! The chicken karaage is still delicious and their salt and pepper tofu is also a hit. I love their unique ice cream flavors and this time, the Thai tea was my favorite. Of course, eating with friends means a little photoshoot.
Homemade Chia Seed Pudding
This recipe is always satisfying! (Especially when someone else makes it for you.) Chia seed pudding with fresh fruit, walnuts, and granola. We made a version of this often when we were doing Whole30.
Seasonal Drinks at 101 by TeaHaus (Complimentary)
I was excited to visit one of my favorites to try their seasonal drinks. They have a pumpkin spice boba, masala chai tea (my favorite), and the tiramisu latte. The beef noodle soup is the perfect cold-weather food!
Homemade Korean Fried Chicken Sandwich
Our friend Bruce made these delicious sandwiches for their Halloween party. They were spicy, juicy, and delicious.
Brunch at Swedish Hill
This is how you do brunch. Swedish Hill has re-opened with new owners, a new menu, and a new look! The refresh looks great and it was packed on a Sunday morning. My friend Janna and I both got entrees with smoked salmon – bagel and lox for her and avocado toast for me – and we couldn’t help it but order lots of pastries. I thought the pastries were slightly disappointing, but the apple galette is one I’d definitely order again! They have many more types of pastries, so I would try some others when I visit again.
Coffee at Intelligentsia Coffee (Complimentary)
Janna and I visited this new coffee shop. We got to chat with their manager Angela about coffee and learn all about the company’s commitment to direct trade. They work directly with farmers to grow and buy their coffee beans. Their new coffee shop, built with Austin vibes in mind, is their 14th store in the U.S. and has a cool, colorful wall. The Avena Latte is one of their most popular drinks and has steeped cinnamon, ginger, orange peel, and vanilla in turbinado sugar simple syrup. They also have an interesting drink called the Roadrunner, which is sparkling cold coffee, grapefruit, soda, and agave. It’s like a sparkling coffee!
