These posts used to be monthly years ago and after eating at 53 Austin restaurants, bars, etc this January, February, and March, it makes me think I’m going to need to share these more often! Maybe I’ll move these to every other month instead of quarterly? Until then, be sure you’re subscribed to my monthly newsletter to get restaurant recs.
Here are 12 of my favorite eats from this first quarter.
Dinner at Sijie Special Noodle
Sijie Special Noodle is a great new Chinese restaurant in North Austin near Anderson Mill and 183. It’s a hit! Here are my 3 must-order dishes:
- Pan-fried Soup Buns
- Snowflake Pan-Fried Dumplings
- Beef Stone Pot Noodle Soup
Dessert at Kesshō
This food truck offers bean-to-bar chocolate, gelato, and baked goods. I tried their chocolate gelato and chocolate chip cookie – made with their chocolate – and they are delicious!
Dinner at Lenoir
Lenoir celebrated its 12th anniversary, so we enjoyed a special 5-course dinner there. The dinner included their signature house-made pullman bread with smoked pepper pimento cheese, charred cauliflower, gnocchi, pork, and chocolate cremeux. It’s still a solid option for finer dining in Austin.
Breakfast at Rosen’s Bagel
How good does this classic lox bagel sandwich at Rosen’s Bagel look? It’s the breakfast of champions and pretty hearty.
Dinner at The Guest House (Complimentary)
This Downtown Austin restaurant is for dressing up and celebrating. It’s for foodies who want a good time and good food. It’s for people who love beautiful design, bougie vibes, and high energy. They’re known for their theatrical cocktails. I went for a media visit and it was a great experience.
What we had:
- NA Cocktails – bartenders make them on the fly
- Brioche feuillette (comp bread, more like a layered pastry) – AMAZING
- Steak tartare – yum
- Traditional caviar service – ok
- Coastal oysters – pretty good
- Parmesan truffle crusted filet – loved
- Miso mushrooms (side) – loved
- The Garden (dessert) – creative, tasty, unique
- Sticky Toffee Cake – AMAZING – this will be on my best eats list!
Pastries at My Sweetish Friend
This new food truck has some of the best pastries in town. I love the Swedish tosca almond cake; it’s a must-order! The other offerings are also delicious – apple brown, pear cardamom cake, chocolate hazelnut brownie, and good morgon muffin.
Dumplings at Everest Food Truck
This food truck has two Austin locations and is known for its Nepalese food. I liked their momos – Nepalese dumplings, which have lots of curry spice.
Babka ATX
One of my favorite vendors at the farmers market is Babka ATX. Babka is similar to a cinnamon roll. The layers are full of flavors and I recommend butter pecan and cinnamon flavors.
Barbecue Lunch at Mum Foods
I first tried Mum Foods when I had their brisket and pastrami at the farmers market. They now have a permanent brick-and-mortar so we can enjoy their barbecue anytime. My go-to is The Rachel sandwich – 1/3 pound of our famous pastrami on grilled sourdough rye with coleslaw, russian dressing, and melted swiss. I also tried the chess pie and the chocolate chip cookie, with the later being my favorite.
Dinner at Allday Pizza
There is a lot of great pizza in Austin but this has easily become one of my favorites! You can buy by the slice or choose five slices and get an additional one free. You can also buy whole pies too. Don’t forget dessert – soft serve with topping customizations or affogato, olive oil cake, or chocolate chip cookie. I liked all about the same, so it depends on what you’re in the mood for.
Japanese Eats at Choo Sando and Omakase
If you’re looking for Japanese sandwiches and sushi, Choo Sando is a casual, delicious spot. They have everything set up in coolers and get there early because they sell out. Their sushi sets are tasty and I also liked their fruit and cream sando.
Seafood at The Boiling Crab
It’s crawfish season! It is more expensive this year but still delicious. The spicy level at this Vietnamese Texas chain is SPICY! My favorite thing however was the crabber fries – fries topped with crab.
