Austin restaurants and dishes are featured in my Flavors of the Month posts. Check out this post for recommendations on where to eat next!
Yowza! After last year, I decided to move the Flavors of the Month series quarterly because of the lack of places to feature. I wasn’t sure what this year would look like, but this plan is not working because the things I ate in April, May, and June are plentiful! I’ve shortened my comments a bit so I could feature lots of places, especially many that have opened this year.
Crawfish
I love crawfish season! We ate crawfish many times this year, including at Deckhands Oyster Bar (our favorite!), Crawfish Shack, SXSE, and Shoal Creek Saloon. The consensus was that crawfish with lots of butter and spice make for a more delicious time.
Lunch at The Well
This new Downtown Austin restaurant on 2nd Street is all about healthy and fresh eats! This chicken dish included sweet potato hash, mushrooms, and peas.
Cream Puffs at Beard Papa’s
This Japanese bakery chain serving cream puffs opened in the Domain. You choose your shell and your filling. Cream puffs aren’t my favorite dessert, but if you love them, give this a try.
Lunch at Huckleberry
This food truck recently found its spot at Circle Brewery. They serve sustainably sourced seafood. The crab quesadilla was great! (See this post for more about brewery food.)
Brunch at June’s All Day
My mother-in-law was in town and we enjoyed a tasty lunch on June’s patio. We had the appetizing board (like a deconstructed bagel and lox), artichoke, and beef tartare.
Tasting at SXSE
I told you all about our tasting at SXSE in this post! We also went to their food truck for their yummy crispy rice and they hosted a few weekends of crawfish boils.
Lunch at Coco’s Cafe
It’s been a while since I’ve been to Coco’s Cafe but their peppercorn chicken with rice is always a hit!
Dinner at Salty Cargo
Hawaiian food with an Asian twist, and you have to order the tori katsu sando. The panko chicken thigh is so juicy and the garlic aioli! And finish off your meal with the pineapple coconut cake.
Brunch at Joi
Joi opened at the Domain and serves Southeast Asian-inspired cuisine. I got a bento box with okonomiyaki, which was pretty good, though a little expensive.
Ice Cream at Jeni’s Ice Cream
I first had Jeni’s Ice Cream when I visited Charleston, and now Austin has TWO locations in the last year! Did you know you can order an ice cream flight? Oh yes. My favorite flavors at Jeni’s are brown butter almond brittle, salty caramel, wildberry lavender, and brambleberry.
Seafood Lunch at Plank
Have you ever eaten caviar? You can get it at Plank! They opened in the Domain after their first location in Omaha. I also had sea scallops with golden caviar on top of squid ink linguini. This was a decadent meal!
Dessert at Sweet Paris
This chain shop from Houston serves sweet and savory crepes, and my friend Janna and I came for dessert. Strawberry and nutella is a classic flavor.
Dinner at Honey Moon Spirit Lounge
This new restaurant has eye-catching design with unique dishes on its menu. We enjoyed the pimento cheese, king crab tart, and the koji-aged steak frites. I wouldn’t order the chicken confit again.
Lunch at Oakmont Food Company
Fun lunch with friends included loaded pupusas (with carnitas), Texas-style poke, and the smoked short rib grilled cheese. I was a little disappointed with dessert but would try other sweet options.
Dinner at De Nada Cantina
This casual restaurant with craveable tacos is a great addition to East Cesar Chavez. I would order all three of these again: Barbacoa Taco (slow-braised beef), Verduras Taco (mushroom picadillo, grilled zucchini, refritos negros, and queso cotija), and Carnitas and Cheese Quesadilla. (This was a complimentary media tasting.)
Sweet Rolls at Cranky Granny’s
You’ve probably had a cinnamon roll but have you had one covered in creamy glaze and walnut topping? Or what about topped with crushed cookies or caramelized apples? Cranky Granny’s in the Domain has plenty of options.
Lunch at Foodheads
A neighborhood favorite, Foodheads, has been serving sandwiches, soups, and salads for over 20 years! While their menu has plenty of customer favorites, they invited me in to try their new barbeque sandwiches. The pastrami melt has house-smoked pastrami, and they also have sandwich options with brisket and pork belly. Don’t forget a cup of soup as a side and their customer favorite coconut cupcake (so good!) for dessert. (This was a complimentary media tasting.)
Lunch at T-Loc’s Sonora
Have you ever had a Sonoron hot dog? These Tucson locals brought their Arizona cuisine to Austin through this food truck on Burnet. The hot dog is wrapped in bacon and topped with pinto beans, onions, tomatoes, jalapeno sauce, mayo, and mustard. Don’t knock it until you try it!
Happy Hour at Hank’s
I went to Hank’s twice recently and ordered the fried zucchini both times. It’s so crispy and tasty. I also loved the grilled artichoke and the grilled cheese. This spot is great for happy hour.
What was your favorite thing you ate recently?
