Is it a Texas thing or do I really like tacos? I went to three different taco places this month! Also, brunch at St. Philip, two Austin food trucks, dinner at one of my favorites – Sway, and sushi at Tomo! Here are the flavors of my month.
La Fresa Taco at Fresa’s Chicken
Fresa’s Chicken is so underrated. Their fire-grilled achiote chicken has a delicious charred taste and the tacos are loaded.
All the fish at Tomo
We’ve been really good at going to Tomo lately and bringing along friends to experience it. We actually went three times this month! It’s always a fresh and delightful visit. We usually get sashimi and the dishes are very customizable. Tell them what kind of fish you like and they’ll dress them up. I recommend: yellowtail, king salmon, and Japa Tai. My favorite dressings are with truffle oil and fresh wasabi. The savory dish pictured below had a fully fried fish that was entirely edible. Don’t forget the Cucumber Sake!
Polenta Fries and St. Philip Pizza at St. Philip
My friends Rasy and Rochelle came into town one weekend, so we went to enjoy brunch at St. Philip. We started with the crispy polenta fries, and boyfriend and I split the St. Philip pizza (burrata, tomato, basil) with added greens. Yum!
Tacos and Chips and Guacamole at Taco Flats
Nom, nom, nom. Taco Flats has a long list of tacos and they are tasty. I like the Bur-ro (spinach, fried egg, avocado, pico de gallo, queso fresco) and Austinite (refried black beans, spinach, avocado). Their guacamole is great, too!
Beer Can Chicken
On Labor Day, we set up an epic Slip ‘N’ Slide and we also made the BEST beer can chicken! And by we, I mean our friend Barry who owns a Big Green Egg and mixed the chicken rub. Rubbed and stuffed with onions, cilantro and half a beer, these chickens turned out incredibly flavorful and moist.
San Francisco Eats
I ate lots of tasty things in San Francisco! Be sure to hop over to my post all about the San Francisco eats and restaurants to learn more.
The Independent at Torchy’s Tacos
This taco at Torchy’s Tacos is amazing. Fried Portobello mushroom strips, refried black beans, and avocado slices make it for me. The taco deceivingly feels healthy, so let’s pretend it really is.
Fro-Yo at Pinkberry
This was a delightful treat after being outside in the Texas heat for too long. This Pinkberry peach sorbet with strawberries, kiwis, granola and fruity pebbles was a great pick-me-up.
Lamb/Beef Gyro at Big Fat Greek Gyros
Time flew by and I realized I had many deals to take advantage of in the Austin Passbook. My BBBS little and I headed to this food truck on Rainey Street to try their gyros. My little had never had a gyro before but she really liked the chicken one. I really enjoyed the lamb/beef gyro!
Alligator Po Boy at ATX Boudain Hut
It tastes like chicken! My friend Aaron and I ventured back to West Campus to try ATX Boudain Hut with the Austin Passbook deal. I thought my Alligator Po Boy was tasty though the Texas heat didn’t make eating outside easy.
Because who wants to see the flash of my camera in a dark restaurant (aka great food I didn’t get a photo of this month):
Dinner at Sway
This modern Thai restaurant is one of my favorites in town. Thai food is packed with flavor, from sour to sweet to spicy, and Sway does the flavors well. For dinner, we enjoyed the prawn miange (prawns in betel leaf like a lettuce wrap), tom kha gai (chicken in coconut broth soup), a side of green beans, and a whole crispy branzino fish. Dinner felt light but we were full and happy by the end of dinner.
What tasty flavors have you enjoyed this month?
