I started working out and running because it was the cool thing to do in college. Really! I didn’t play sports in high school and never worked out before, but my friends were doing it, people talked about going to work out all the time and my college’s gym is pretty swanky, so I got roped in. And soon after, I started running when I couldn’t make it to the gym and I signed up for my first 5K. So, that means I’m totally a runner now, right?
Fast forward three years later, I’m so thankful I’m able to run. It’s easier to motivate myself to put on my sneakers and get out there than having to get in my car and go to the gym. And, it’s a great work-out and a good time to clear my mind or concentrate on particular things, depending on my mood.
Now, with 5K and 10K marked off my list, a half-marathon is up next. (And honestly, I have no desire to go further than a half-marathon right now.) I’ve signed up for two half-marathons and obstacles kept me from running them, but this is the year it’s going to happen. I can feel it, especially after cheering on some lovely bloggers in January as they ran the Austin Half-Marathon. Seeing them finish and being in that environment was so inspiring. First up is a 10K on July 4th and I’m researching half-marathons in the fall (October to December time period). Any suggestions?!
As Oprah said, “Running is the greatest metaphor for life, because you get out of it what you put into it.” It takes so much courage and motivation to get up off the couch, lace up the sneakers and get out there. Likewise, it takes you making a choice to be strong. You can let laziness and/or your other excuses win, or you can get your head trash out and believe you can do it.
Don’t let excuses win.
