This pattern play party idea has been swirling in my head for a while. There are so many brilliant patterns out there. Though I love simple party design, this was an opportunity to let the patterns fly! Combining pattern décor, macramé and cookie DIYs and some of my adventurous DIY gals, this crafternoon event was lots of fun!

This colorful patterned tablecloth from Target has been waiting for a party and it’s my favorite! Simple flowers brightened up the place.

It’s no party without snacks! I made sure to include cupcakes since I hadn’t made any in a while. These Brown Butter Peach Cupcakes were perfect for a summer celebration. Also, these confetti brownies were chocolate gooey goodness. Those sugar cookies were what we used to DIY.

Plenty of La Croix to cleanse the palate! Thank you to Amy for bringing a yummy bottle of rose that we happily finished.

We made two crafts at the party: flooded sugar cookies and a macramé wall hanging. Here are some shots from the cookie action.

I’ve been wanting to try macramé for a long time! I found the jersey yarn macramé wall hanging kit from Wool and the Gang. They had lots of fun colors for our project. (FYI: the yarn is made from recycled factory cut-offs so the color options change frequently. If you see a color you like, grab it quickly!)

The macramé wall hanging was quite the craft. It was definitely a lot harder and more time-consuming than I thought it would be. Now we understand the time and effort behind all those beautiful macramé hangings on Instagram and Pinterest!

We all spaced out on the floor since the yarn needed to be long. If I had gotten photos of us at work, you would see us intensely concentrating on our craft. None of us finished but hopefully we’ll have finished products in the future!

Here’s macramé progress! I definitely put a lot of “character” in at the beginning. 😉

I’m a type-A planner and I don’t really know how “having people over spontaneously” works. But as my party planning experience grows, I’m learning to let go a little (read: chill out) and put more thought into what matters most when it comes to home entertaining. It’s not always about the decor and food though it can enhance the experience. For this DIY Watercolor Party, what mattered most was the opportunity to learn something new and enjoy time with some creative gals!

Jane of A Taste of Koko was our gracious host and it was perfect to gather in her newly renovated space. We all brought some brunch items to share and we had a delicious spread of pastries, coffee, chocolate and strawberries.

In talking with my crafty friends who participated in my DIY parties last year, we wanted to do more DIY projects but also keep them affordable. We used this Brit + Co online class about watercolor illustrations ($19) and put it up on Jane’s TV. I bought all our materials ahead of time (Thanks, Amazon Prime!) and in sharing some of the materials, the total cost for each person was $15. Take a look at the beautiful results:

We all got to try a new craft and create something cute, all while watching our dollars. Sounds like a win-win to me!

What’s your favorite kind of craft that we should try in the future?

My friend Sarah and I hosted a sweet, little Valentine’s Day Party with some of our favorite gal pals this past weekend. We threw together this fun party in a little more than a week! Sarah and I had been emailing back and forth about DIY projects we wanted to do, and the look and feel of our ideas seemed perfectly made for a Valentine’s get-together. Take a look!

Valentine's Day TableValentine’s is a very versatile party theme. You can do up the room with hearts or use a classic black and white base with splashes of girly pink or red. Sarah’s open, minimalistic kitchen was the perfect setting for the latter. A few pops of color here and there with flowers, a heart garland and a table runner tied in the Valentine’s theme.

Valentine's Day Table Fearless CaptivationsSarah made this excellent strawberry shrub with red wine vinegar for our drinks. One or two tablespoons of the mixture was topped off with Topo Chico or cava.

For our DIY snacks, we decorated rice krispies and made pastry tarts. For the pastry tarts, we used pre-made puff pastry and a selection of jams, including a homemade jam by Amy’s mother-in-law! With a little mix of lemon juice, powdered sugar and food coloring; Sarah made a icing and we topped the treats with sprinkles.

Puff PastryFor the rice krispies, I pre-made the rice krispies with my favorite Smitten Kitchen recipe. We used a heart cookie cutter to get our shapes, and then we drizzled chocolate and finished them off with sprinkles.

Valentine's DIY Party Fearless CaptivationsFor our other DIY, we made colorful pepper mills with dried flowers and peppercorn. Sarah first saw this DIY in the Near and Far cookbook. You can find a similar recipe here. We layered peppercorn with dried calendula, roses, hibiscus and lavender. It’s a pretty result that can be cracked onto yogurt or ice cream.

It’s been a while since I’ve thrown a DIY party, so what other solution is there besides throwing a party?! Marble is a popular aesthetic, especially with photographers. The marbling look is fun and creative because each piece is never the same and you can get lost in its effortless blending. DIY marbling crafts are not only fun to make but they’re relatively easy to do and the results are elegant and so pleasing to the eye. Throughout preparing for the party and making our craft, we kept oohhing and ahhhing about how pretty the marbling turned out. Here’s how some of my favorite ladies and I enjoyed a DIY marbling-themed party!

First, the set-up. Shaving cream was the magical ingredient in the pretty papers for the backdrop, table decor, menu and place cards. It is slightly messy to make but it’s easy to clean up, it smells good and you can see how beautiful the results are!

I made all of the sheets for the party in less than three hours. Quick tutorial: Cover a tray with shaving cream. Add a few drops of food coloring and swirl with a spatula. Place a sheet of paper on top of the shaving cream. Lift and scrap off the shaving cream with a metal or plastic ruler or edge. Let dry and voila! Be sure to cover your work space with newspapers and have paper towels on hand; if not careful, the dye can transfer to things you don’t want dyed!

Of course, we enjoyed bites and drinks because what’s a party without snacks? Spanakopita and zucchini pizza bites have a slight marble look and were easy finger foods.

When I saw this Almond and Blackberry Pavlova recipe on Camille Styles, I knew I HAD to make it for the party. Not only is the cream on top marbled with blackberry sauce but it is probably the prettiest dessert I’ve ever made! The bottom is meringue and the top is blackberry whipped cream. The taste is light and slightly tart, and it was a hit!

Time to get crafting! We used a tutorial from A Beautiful Mess to make these pretty marbled jewelry dishes. All it takes is oven bake clay: white clay, black clay, gray clay and a pack of bright clay. After the dishes came out of the oven, we had a lot of fun putting a gilded touch with the gold liquid gilding. We resisted gilding everything in sight after that. Gorgeous!

This craft takes 45 minutes at most and is hard to mess up, so give it a try! To make it easier on you, Brit + Co has a DIY marbling kit with all the supplies and instructions ready for you. Check out the kit here.
