*Sadly, Infinite Monkey Theorem, the business this post is about, closed in Austin. See this post for more bachelorette party ideas and this post for a Downtown Austin wine tour option.
Infinite Monkey Theorem
Infinite Monkey Theorem prides itself on doing things a little differently than the traditional winery and they are finding success with being out of the box. Their untraditional methods include a focus on making wine more approachable.
First, their name. The infinite monkey theorem states that “a monkey hitting keys at random on a typewriter keyboard for an infinite amount of time will almost surely type a given text, such as the complete works of William Shakespeare.” Thus, from chaos comes masterpieces. This illustrates the wine-making process well since a lot of it is like a chemistry experiment.
This winery is originally from Denver (their HQ winery is still there), and they opened in Austin in late 2015. While they first started selling wines imported from their Denver location, they are continually increasing their production in Austin. They don’t have a vineyard but they source their grapes from Lubbock, Texas, and produce their Mediterranean-style wine in-house.
Location + Tap Room
Infinite Monkey Theorem is located in East Austin and is one of the first urban wineries in town. That means you don’t need to travel far into the Hill Country for wine! While their taproom is open to the public, you can schedule private tours and tastings for your group. They do all events, from bachelorette parties to corporate events, and you can reserve private areas to the whole winery.
I love the funky vibes, cool art, and light-filled tap room that echoes their untraditional methods. In building their tap room, they asked local artists to help with the art and design. You’ll find cool murals on the walls and unique chairs and tables. They also have a patio with picnic tables, which is perfect on a nice day!
Wine
Yes, you can get their wine in cans and bottles at the grocery store and on tap around town! They focus on kegging instead of bottles for better quality and to be more sustainable. (Kegs can be cleaned out and refilled.) You’ll also find special wines only available in the taproom.
During our tasting, we tried five wines: sparkling, Trebbiano, rose, Tempranillo Austin, and Tempranillo Denver. The rose seemed to be the favorite among the group but the whites were also at the top.
Tour
Our fun tour was about 45-60 minutes and led by Cat, the winery manager. She told us about each wine we tasted and led the tour to their back production area. We learned all about how they produce, what they produce, and how a winery works.
Thank you to Infinite Monkey Theorem for hosting us, and I hope you all get the chance to visit them soon!
