Egypt was a dream trip I wasn’t expecting to be so good!

Egypt hadn’t been high on my to-travel list but the Red Sea was well known for diving, so off we went. (Our trip was in October 2018.) After returning, I can’t recommend Egypt enough. All the historic sites and diving opportunities make this a place to visit. It was a dream and for me, it will definitely be a special place.

This video will give you a glimpse into our trip and the fun things we saw and did in Cairo, Luxor, and the Red Sea.

Mexico City Travel Guide | Travel Blog | Fearless Captivations

I’m basking in the memories of our Mexico City trip. Can you tell? A few weeks after returning, there was a great flight sale to Mexico City within the next year and I almost pushed book. We had a packed trip but there were still places to see and restaurants to try. There’s a reason why travel bloggers visit and write extensively about Mexico City. Read on and you’ll learn why.

Why Visit Mexico City?

You don’t know Mexico. From the depth of its culture to the variety in its country, Mexico is a vibrant place with much to offer, with Mexico City being its crown jewel. You may have visited Cancun, Tulum, Puerto Vallarta, or Cozumel, but beyond a picturesque beachfront, Mexico City is a place that will charm you and open the door to give you a taste of what the country is all about. The city entices you to walk its neighborhoods, feel the sun at plazas and markets, and go beyond the few Mexican dishes you may have tried. While the touristy destinations in Mexico will bring you relaxation, a nice tan, and plenty of cold drinks, Mexico City reminds us that discovering somewhere we’re not quite sure about is how we open our eyes to adventure.

Mexico City has a little bit of everything I like in a trip. The abundance of cultural experiences, outdoor activities, history, and incredible food will easily convince you’re right where you’re supposed to be.

Quick Tips

  • Airport: Mexico City International Airport; officially Aeropuerto Internacional Benito Juarez; MEX
  • Currency: Pesos, Mex$
  • Visa: unnecessary if you have a passport from United States of America, Canada, Japan, United Kingdom or Schengen area (European Union)
  • Vaccinations: none required
  • Language: Spanish. You’ll find English-speaking people at hotels, well-known restaurants, and tourist sights, but it would be best to know a few phrases to help you out. (see the bottom of this post)

Best Time to Visit Mexico City

Springtime – March through May – is the best time to visit Mexico City and is also the busiest time for tourism. The summer and fall months – June through November – have a little more rain. The lowest temperatures are around winter – December to February – with highs in the 70s and lows in the 40s.

We visited the last weekend of May and it was a low of 55 degrees F and high of 85 degrees F. Walking around, it got a bit warm, especially at Teotihuacan, but it wasn’t unbearable. Bring a light jacket for cool weather and possible rain.

How Long Should I Spend in Mexico City?

If you’re seeing the city at a very quick pace, you need four days, which we did. I would have been happier with two or three more days and could have easily filled my time in Mexico City. So, at minimum four days and preferably a week.

Getting Around Mexico City

You can get around Mexico City by Uber, bus, metro, or taxi. Metro or bus will be cheapest while Uber is the easiest. Our Uber rides ranged from $2-6.

What to Wear in Mexico City

It’s always good to try to blend in when traveling. Locals seemed to wear pants instead of short dresses and shorts. In fact, many seemed sensitive to cool weather and were wearing big jackets when it would get to a high of 85 degrees! Of course, colorful clothing and flashy jewelry will make you stand out more. For one of our tours, they suggested we wear closed-toe shoes, pants, and no tank tops. The most important thing is to dress for the weather. Layers are good for the cool mornings and nights.

Is Mexico City Safe?

There was never a time I felt unsafe while in Mexico City. We used Uber to get around so we didn’t look lost much and had no trouble communicating where we were going. There seemed to be police everywhere. A good rule of thumb to staying safe is not staying out too late, at least not in questionable neighborhoods, or wandering into dark alleys. Avoid these neighborhoods. If you’re taking public transportation or wandering crowded markets, watch your belongings. [See other travel safety tips here.]

How to Stay Healthy in Mexico City

You can’t drink from the tap. Always drink bottled water and use it to brush your teeth. Avoid water in your mouth in the shower. This post has lots of good pointers also. Stay hydrated.

We both got food poisoning on our last day in Mexico City. Thankfully our travel timing allowed us to spend a few hours recovering in our hotel room instead of in transit back home. It seemed like it could have been much worse, but it did make us miss a few hours of fun we had planned and after the initial torture, mild discomfort continued for a few days. We were fairly cautious and didn’t eat anywhere sketchy, so I’m assuming it was bad cheese, crema, or salsa made from unwashed or washed under tap water vegetables. Most restaurants are aware of safe practices. Watch food preparation and question how long something has been sitting out, especially dairy products.

While there are drugstores available, it’s a good idea to pack some medicine for immediate relief! Get over-the-counter tablets or a travel-focused doctor can provide a prescription before you travel.

Mexico City Neighborhoods

There are plenty of cool neighborhoods in Mexico City to explore and stay.

  • Centro – the center of the city, hustle and bustle
  • Condesa – hip, cool
  • Coyoacán – fashionable, hippies, liberals
  • Hipodromo – hippies, quiet
  • Navarte – quiet, residential
  • Roma Norte – hip, cool
  • Zona Rosa – historic gay neighborhood, parties

Where to Stay in Mexico City

La Condesa and Roma Norte are good, central neighborhoods to stay in.

Our hotel, Room Mate Valentina, was one of the least expensive I found and it was around $80 per night. We also found out in the wee hours of the morning that it also happened to be in a neighborhood with a vibrant nightlife (Zona Rosa). Oops! Thankfully the partying only happened on Friday night and the hotel had earplugs available for the rest of the weekend, though they weren’t needed. It was a wonderful hotel otherwise with a spacious and remodeled room, central location, kind staff, and convenience stores next door.

Here are some other hotels I considered:

Airbnb is a great choice in Mexico City. The average nightly rate is $40 and there are lots of cute, bright, and modern places.

Where to Play in Mexico City

Teotihuacan and Museo Frida Kahlo are only two of the many options of activities in Mexico City. Take a look at this list to plan your schedule.

Where to Eat in Mexico City

I’ve got everything you need to know about eating and drinking in Mexico City right here! Get ready to try street tacos.

Spanish Phrases to Know

  • Hola – hello
  • Por favor – please
  • Gracias – thank you
  • Adios – goodbye
  • Disculpe – excuse me
  • Con permiso – with permission
  • Buenos Dias – good morning
  • Buenos Tardes – good afternoon
  • Buenos Noches – good night
  • Lo siento, pero no hablo Espanol – I’m sorry, but I don’t speak Spanish

Conclusion

As I was looking forward to my trip I had a few people tell me to not get kidnapped and asked if it was safe to visit. While I know there could be incidences anywhere you travel, I hope history or rumors don’t deter you from booking a trip to this beautiful city. On the other side, I talked to many more people who were excited for me to discover the city they fell in love with on their trip. I’ve become one of those people upon my return and I look forward to the day I visit Mexico City again. I know there are still neighborhoods to wander and tacos to eat!

I hope this travel guide prepares you well for a fun trip to Mexico City!

Want to visit the Cayman Islands? Use this travel guide to help plan your trip!

Fearless Captivations Cayman Islands Travel Guide

The Cayman Islands enticed us because of the diving opportunities and the easy trip to Miami, where we met up with friends. Here’s all the info that can help make your trip easier to plan and more fun!

Why the Cayman Islands?

The Cayman Islands are easy. If you want a tropical vacation with lots of options and little planning, the Cayman Islands have you covered. They, Grand Cayman especially, are focused on tourism, providing plenty of options for activities, restaurants, and hotels. Because of this, families, especially those with kids, are everywhere. You’ll also find fantastic diving at more than 300 dive sites in the Cayman Islands!

Quick Tips

  • Language: English
  • Currency: Caymanian Dollar CI$. They do accept US dollars though you’ll likely get Caymanian dollars in return. The exchange rate is close but CI$ is higher.
  • Wear sunscreen and reapply, especially if you’re diving! I learned this the hard way on this trip.
  • Also wear bug spray for the bugs!
  • Lingo: you’ll hear locals call the islands Grand, Little, and Brac for short.
  • Because the Cayman Islands is a British Overseas territory, you’ll meet plenty of British people. You’ll also find many Canadians and expats.
  • If you rent a car, drive on the left!

Weather and Best Time to Visit the Cayman Islands

Going at the end of March, we met so many from Canada and the northern part of the U.S. escaping the winter weather! With its year-round temps, it’s the ideal place for a beach vacation. Watch out for hurricane season.

Getting There and Getting Around

You’ll land in Grand Cayman at Owen Roberts International (GCM).

If you’re staying long in Grand Cayman, if you’re staying away from Seven Mile Beach, or if you want to get around easily, it’s recommended that you rent a car. Otherwise, taxi is your option. We stayed in West Bay and we did a lot of waiting and calling for taxis which was a bit of a hassle.

Where to Stay in the Cayman Islands

Since you’ll be landing in Grand Cayman first, staying put is a good option because the biggest island has plenty to do and plenty of accommodations. If you’d like a slower pace, visit Little Cayman or Cayman Brac. Cayman Brac is known to be the most “Caymanian” island and is much less tourism focused. Many of the accommodations on Little Cayman are diving-focused but you don’t need to dive to stay there.

Grand Cayman Hotels
The average Airbnb on Seven Mile Beach is about $327 a night. Hotels on Seven Mile Beach are easily $600 a night while the average hotel night in Grand Cayman is about $300 a night.

Little Cayman Hotels

There are a few hotel options on Little Cayman and many offer all-inclusive packages that include your accommodation, meals, and diving.

Where to Dive in the Cayman Islands

I tell you all about diving (plus see a video) in this post! There are over 300 dive sites in the Cayman Islands, making it a top destination for all levels of divers. The diving was good and fairly easy because there are so many dive sites close by.

What to do on Grand Cayman Other Than Dive

While Stingray City is a popular attraction in Grand Cayman, I do not support it. This is a place where you can take a tour to swim and feed southern stingrays. While they are not trapped in enclosures, the act of baiting and touching the stingrays for years has changed their natural habits. I’ve also read accounts of stingrays aggressively swimming onto tourists, almost knocking them over, because the stingrays know tourists have food. There have been few injuries but know while they are friendly here, they are still wild creatures. If you want to see stingrays in their natural habitat, try a Discover Scuba trip.

What to do on Little Cayman

Rent a scooter and explore the island. We rented from Scooten Scooters.

Where to Eat in the Cayman Islands

Get your fill of jerk chicken and rum cake! Check out this post about things to eat (and where to eat them) in the Cayman Islands. The great thing is the islands, especially Grand Cayman, offer international cuisine, making it easy to find everything from sushi to local Caribbean eats.

Conclusion

Don’t forget to grab some Tortuga Rum Cake Co. cakes as a souvenir! The Cayman Islands are everything you’d want from a touristy Caribbean island. You’ll have a relaxing vacation.

Check out this quick video from our trip!

The Cayman Islands provided another opportunity to dive in the Caribbean. Here are some tips to help plan your dive trip to the Cayman Islands plus a video of our diving adventures.

The Cayman Islands are where I hit 50 dives and started appreciating the small things. Maybe it was me finally feeling the most steady and calm while diving as I ever have (only took about three years!), but I truly enjoyed diving during this trip. We also saw nudibranches, very small sea slugs, for the first time, among many other favorites.

Cayman Islands Scuba Diving

Best Time to Dive in the Cayman Islands

It’s always a good time to dive in the Cayman Islands. The temperature is 21-27°C/70-80°F year-round. Be wary of diving from June to November because of hurricane season; you never know what will happen.

Arrow Crab looks like a spider

Which Cayman Island to Dive?

Grand Cayman is the biggest island and the easiest to get to because of direct flights from the U.S. Getting to Cayman Brac and Little Cayman will require another flight after landing in Grand Cayman. Little Cayman and Cayman Brac are both about a 40-minute flight from Grand Cayman while Little Cayman to Cayman Brac is a 10-minute flight.

Grand Cayman is the most developed island, with hordes of tourists and businesses that support tourism. Little Cayman is the quietest, with one main road, one police officer, and a handful of resorts. Cayman Brac is in the middle, though still much quieter than Grand Cayman.

It’s fun to visit at least two islands to get different experiences. You’re more likely to have a more intimate dive experience on Little Cayman or Cayman Brac unless you book a private tour on Grand Cayman. That means more personalized instruction, smaller groups, and guides that are more inclined to point out smaller wildlife.

Flounder

The Best Dive Sites in the Cayman Islands

There are more than 200 dive sites around Grand Cayman and around 60 dive sites each near Little Cayman and Cayman Brac. Here are the most well-known dive sites:

  • Bloody Bay Marine Park, Little Cayman
  • Mixing Bowl, Little Cayman
  • Devil’s Grotto and Eden Rock, Grand Cayman
  • USS Kittiwake, Grand Cayman
  • Babylon, Grand Cayman
  • MV Captain Keith Tibbets, Cayman Brac
  • Stingray City, Grand Cayman

I did my first wreck dive in Grand Cayman! I also very quickly learned I do not like wreck dives, haha. USS Kittiwake served as a submarine rescue ship for 49 years and was donated by the U.S. Maritime Administration. It was purposefully sunk near Seven Mile Beach in 2011. In 2017, a tropical storm pushed the ship onto its side. The tilted ship felt like a fun house to me and the mind games made it harder to dive. It threw off my center. We also went through some very narrow entryways and made sharp, tight turns that made me uncomfortable about bumping into the ship. There wasn’t a lot of wildlife to see. I would much rather go through swim-throughs and see more fish and coral, which we did a lot of on our other dives.

USS Kittiwake

What You’ll See Diving in Cayman Islands

You’ll see many of the Caribbean wildlife in the Cayman Islands. What we saw was similar to what we saw in Honduras and Belize.

We saw nudibranches for the first time! These sea slugs come in all different sizes and designs, and they were so small, I had no clue what they were until we talked about them after the dive. We also saw lots of turtles, squid (even ones mating, haha), rays, and free-swimming sharks! (The sharks I saw previously were sleeping.)

Some of my favorite fishes also made an appearance, including squirrelfish, drum fish, and puffer fish.

Cayman Island Dive Shops, Dive Resorts, and Liveaboards

Vibrant tourism in the Cayman Islands means plenty of dive options, good and bad. Sometimes that means diving with beginners, which makes your dive a little more hectic. It’s easy to feel like one of many tourists being shuffled on and off boats day after day. You’ll also get dive guides that are less than enthused about having to dive AND being vocal about it, whether they mean for their customers to hear or not. To avoid all of that, I recommend researching dive shops before you book and find ones with smaller dive groups. Also, when you’re there, chat up your dive guides and they may be more inclined to personalize your dive as much as possible.

Dive Resorts – Little Cayman
Because Little Cayman is so small, there are a few options and many offer all-inclusive packages that include your accommodation, meals, and diving.

Dive Resorts – Cayman Brac

Dive Resorts – Grand Cayman

Dive Shops – Grand Cayman

  • DiveTech – For diving in Grand Cayman, I narrowed down my choices to Dive Tech and Living the Dream Divers and in the end, the pricing was better at Dive Tech and they had a pink boat. We had a pretty good experience with DiveTech. The instructors were knowledgeable for the briefings and the equipment was in good shape. All the dive spots were no more than five minutes away from shore. Some trips had a bigger group than I would have liked and less experienced divers, but there was always time at the end of the dive to explore on our own. We dove with Lee as our guide several times and he made our experience better with his enthusiasm and knowledge. DiveTech also offers hotel and diving packages to make planning easier. Owner Jo has made DiveTech’s branding all pink everything, from the boat to the towels, so that’s pretty fun!
  • Living the Dream Divers
  • Don Fosters
  • Epic Divers
  • Ocean Frontiers

Cayman Islands Liveaboard

Conclusion

While the Cayman Islands wouldn’t be my first choice to return to for diving, I’m glad I experienced it. The abundance of dive sites assures you’ll have something new to see on every dive. I liked the overall dive experience better in other countries and there are certainly more affordable diving options in the Caribbean. If you’re a more advanced diver, I recommend a charter (or a guarantee from a dive shop) to the best dive sites. If you’re traveling with people who don’t dive or want a variety of activities, Grand Cayman has plenty of options for everyone to find something they like.

Check out this video of our dives in the Cayman Islands!

Thailand is a country full of adventure and amazing food! Take a look at this video of my trip!

Visiting Thailand was at the top of my life list for so long, it’s a little strange that it’s checked off now. Our two-week trip was filled with big adventures and “pinch me” moments. This video doesn’t do the trip justice but it’s a small reminder of navigating the cities, eating all the best Thai food, experiencing travel brochure moments, and fulfilling the wanderlust that we’re constantly filled with these days.

From eating at insect delicacies on the street to one of the top restaurants in the world, food was an important part of the trip, and I definitely indulged! We also saw plenty of temples, including the incredible White Temple. Another highlight was visiting the gentle giants at Elephant Nature Park. Thailand is also where I first scuba dived in the ocean and stayed on my first liveaboard. I can’t forget the beauty of releasing a lantern at the Yee Peng Lantern Festival. See all of these snippets in this video!

BELIZE! This trip was filled with some of my favorite things: eating, exploring, and diving and turned out to be the perfect way to celebrate my monumental birthday.

Below is a quick video of all the adventures we had in the week. We stayed at a resort that also doubled as our dive shop. Hiking and visiting Maya ruins were also highlights of the trip.

We dove four days and saw some of the most beautiful sea creatures, including turtles, rays, and dolphins. While we don’t have underwater footage of the Blue Hole dive (for fear the GoPro would flood past 130 feet), I’m glad that one is checked off the list. Diving in the Caribbean is fun because there’s always so much wildlife to see.

Oh, don’t forget about the food! I couldn’t get enough fry jacks so you’ll definitely see those in the video.

If you want a seamless vacation, consider Belize!

In 2014, I explored Greece with my friends MJ and Linda. Our 10-day trip took us to Athens, Mykonos, Santorini, and Crete. We ate incredible food and watched many breath-taking sunsets. We got lost while trying to read Greek road signs, drank craft beer, marveled many historical sights, wandered the bright white pathways, and greeted every street cat and dog we encountered.

As with my Spain trip and video, I shot clips in hopes to create a summary video, and here it is! Check out this Greece Travel Video to get a view of our trip and inspire you for yours!

I wish I had taken more video, but I’m glad I took plenty of photos to look back on the memories of this trip. We planned this trip through tips from the Internet and friends. Our trip was a bit of a whirlwind because of the number of places we crammed into a week, but we saw some key places in Greece that are unforgettable. Be sure to check out my other posts about Greece for more recommendations on activities and restaurants.

Want to travel to Spain? In 2013, I went on an unforgettable trip to Spain with three friends. Two weeks, nine cities, seven cathedrals, four museums, three castles, and many more famous sights. Our group was a bunch of foodies so there were meals and meals of delicious food.

I shot a lot of video clips during that trip with the intention of creating a summary video and I’m glad I can finally say I’m checking it off the list! If you’re wondering about the video quality, I shot this on my old point-and-shoot camera I got in 2006. Ha!

Before this trip, I had traveled a handful of times (domestic and international, mostly family vacations), but this experience sparked a new inspiration for travel. Spain is an incredibly beautiful country and one of the few places I’ve visited and am itching to return. Our whirlwind trip made me wish for more time and I know there are many more beautiful cities and areas to visit in Spain.

My friend and travel mate Sarah planned the majority of this trip and we relied a lot on Rick Steves’ Spain guidebook. The book contains invaluable recommendations and tips. If you’d like to see photos from my trip and read tips about traveling Spain, check out my Spain posts:

One of the adventurous gems we have in Austin is the Lake Travis Zipline Adventures. It features the longest zipline in Texas and five different zip lines from 250 to 2800 feet long. Depending on your weight, you can go up to 70 miles per hour. We were able to see the beautiful Lake Travis and Hill Country in a fun way.

Lake Travis Zipline Adventures ZiplineHere are some things you should know:

  • Try to book the earliest tour possible (8:30 a.m.) since it gets warm out there.
  • Each tour includes 12 participants at most plus two guides.
  • They provide all the gear necessary. Wear comfortable clothes and closed toe shoes, preferably sneakers. Jewelry and hanging accessories such as scarves are not recommended.
  • Don’t forget sunglasses!
  • You are allowed to bring cameras and phones at your own risk. They do have helmets with GoPro mounts.
  • Zipline tours happen rain or shine, unless there is lightning. I’ve done the tour twice and the first time it was rainy and cold in December, which is not a good idea. I believe they close during the winter season now.
  • The industry standard for tipping the guides is 10-15% per person.
  • They provide ice cold water bottles at four stops along the way.
  • The tour does involve a good amount of hiking. You’ll have plenty of time to take it slowly so don’t wear yourself out.
  • There is a concession stand with snacks, soda, beer and wine at the last zip spot.
